News: Honor View 10 Is Coming Get Oreo & a Bigger Battery for Just $20 More Than the OnePlus 5T
Huawei's sub-brand, Honor, just announced a pair of new smartphones to help close out the year. We knew the midrange Honor 7X was on its way, but what came as a surprise was the announcement of the Honor View 10 and its impending release in the US. Thanks to Honor, US customers will have even more choices in the flagship market with this new device. The Honor View 10 (known as the V10 in China) is a flagship device that acts as an alternative to the Huawei Mate 10 lineup. Although sharing the same chipset, there are some key differences that separate the two devices, with one being the price. At $499 with an impressive spec sheet and cutting-edge design, Honor has positioned the View 10 to go head-to-head with the OnePlus 5T.(Updated: March 2018)
Full Spec SheetOS Version: Android 8.1 OreoSkin: EMUI 8.1CPU: Kirin 970GPU: Mali-G72 MP12RAM: 6 GBBattery: 3,750 mAh (with SuperCharge)Storage:128 GB (expandable via MicroSD)Display Type: IPS LCDScreen Size: 5.99 inchesResolution: WFHD (2160 x 1080)Dimensions: 6.18" x 2.95" x 0.28"Rear Camera Resolution: 16 MP + 20 MP dual camerasRear Camera Aperture: f/1.8Optical Image Stabilization: NoFront Camera Resolution: 13 MPFront Camera Aperture: f/2.0Fingerprint Sensor: Yes (front)Connections: USB-C, 3.5 mm headphone jack
CPU: Kirin 970 with Neural Processing UnitOne of the standout features of the View 10 is its chipset choice. The View 10 will be the first device to officially release in the US with the Kirin 970 chipset. Kirin 970 is Huawei's in-house flagship processor that offers competitive (sometimes better) performance when compared to Qualcomm flagship 835 SoC.The most unique aspect of this chipset is the introduction of a Neural Processing Unit (NPU). The NPU offers AI capabilities for everyday tasks. Huawei showcased some its features when it was first announced, such as object recognition when taking photos. Another feature is a real-time translator of documents without the need to for an internet connection. The NPU also offers an overall performance increase due to its ability to assist the CPU in performing tasks. The NPU will learn your usage tendencies to optimize performance over the life of the device.

Display: 18:9 1080p LCDAside from its price tag, the View 10 draws comparisons to the OnePlus 5T due to its design. The 18:9 5.99" display has a similar layout to the 5T, including very small bezels. The two devices even share the same resolution at 1080p full HD. However, the 5T uses AMOLED display technology, whereas the View 10 uses LCD.Honor decided to keep the fingerprint scanner on the front, unlike the new OnePlus device. How this will fair in real-world usage won't be determined until it releases, but images show a fairly compressed fingerprint scanner. Image via HiHonor

Skin: EMUI 8.1The Honor View 10 will ship with the latest version of Android, Android 8.1 Oreo. Not only will benefit from all the major changes that came with Android 8.0, it will also enjoy the minor tweaks of Android 8.1.Don't Miss: All the New Features Coming with Android 8.1 OreoAdditionally, thanks to the Honor Open Source Program for the Honor View 10, custom ROM development has been active. One thousand developers have received Honor View 10 units from Huawei. Huawei has also released kernel sources and gave developers the tools needed to utilize the Kirin 970's NPU.Don't Miss: All the New Features & Changes Coming in Android 8.0 Oreo EMUI is a heavier skin optimized for the Chinese market. However, Honor has recently modified it to better suit Western users. Image by Android Authority/YouTube

Other Specs: 3,750 mAH Battery & Headphone JackHuawei has been known to include higher battery capacity in their devices (especially their flagships), and this device is no exception. The 3,750 mAh power cell puts it on the top five list for battery capacity among 2017 flagships. Despite all the power efficiency found in newer SoCs, nothing beats a higher battery capacity when it comes to overall battery life of a phone. The View 10 should have one of the longest-lasting batteries for top-tier devices. The Honor View 10 packs a 3,750 mAh battery. Image by Android Authority/YouTube The View 10 also goes against the recent trend of removing the headphone jack. No separate dongle or Bluetooth headphones are needed with this device. Unfortunately, we have to say this but yes it has a headphone jack. Image by Android Authority/YouTube
Pricing & AvailabilityThe Honor View 10 is now available for purchase in the US. It comes in black or blue, and currently, Honor is offering a bundle which includes a pair of wireless Bluetooth earbuds (in Black or Red) for $528.99. However, you can also purchase the phone by itself. Whether you decide to use the bundle option or not, a free phone case is included in your order. Additionally, Honor is currently offering a VIP Service Package which includes 3 months of screen protection, free two-way overnight express delivery, best-in-class time, and one-year limited warranty.Buy the Honor View 10 from HiHonor With this pricing, Honor directly competes with OnePlus 5T, offering flagship specs at mid-range pricing. How To: Bypass the LG G3's Dual Window Restrictions for Use with Any App
Watching a YouTube video while surfing the web is real multitasking, and easily achievable on the LG G3. Like the "Multi Window" feature on Samsung Galaxy devices, the G3 has the ability to run two separate apps simultaneously with its Dual Window feature.Unfortunately, you're only limited to stock, Google apps in Dual Window mode, so playing a game and watching Netflix isn't a possibility.Thankfully, developer Abdullah Gheith wasn't having it and developed a mod so all G3 users could add Dual Window compatibility to third-party apps. In order to install the mod, you will have to have a rooted LG G3. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.

Step 1: Install Multi Window ModThe mod can be found on the Play Store for $0.99 using this link, or you can check out the developer's thread on XDA to get a generously offered free version for testing. The paid version does offer the ability to hide LG apps from your list, so if you want the full-powered version, I'd go with that one.

Step 2: Set Up Your AppsOpen the app and grant it Superuser permission, then select the apps you want to use in Dual Window, hit Apply, then Reboot to save.

Step 3: Use Your Enhanced Dual WindowOpen the Dual Window option and your selected apps will be available to use—just drag and drop them like you normally would, and use Twitter while you Instagram, or whatever else you want to do. If you love doing two things at once, then you'll want to give this a try. Let us know what you think, and which apps you like using in Dual Windows, in the comments below.

How To: Party Pooper Lets Your Friends Vote on What Plays Next in Spotify

How To: Party Pooper Lets Your Friends Vote on What Plays Next in Spotify
Everyone's a music aficionado these days. Whether you're having a party or on a road trip with friends, someone is always complaining about the music. There's no possible way to satisfy everyone, so instead of having your music drowned out by persistent nagging, turn Spotify into a democracy, allowing the consensus to pick what plays. Thanks to team at ustwo, the studio that brought us Monument Valley, you can now turn Spotify into a collective experience with their free Party Pooper app, letting you and your buddies vote on whether tracks get pumped or pooped. If it sounds fun, it's because it is, so let's show you how to get started. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.

Step 1: Install Party PooperParty Pooper is available for Android phones and iPhones in the Google Play Store and iOS App Store, respectively. Although it's free, you will need a premium Spotify subscription in order to create playlists. However, the free version of Spotify will work just fine for voting on songs, so only the person who is actually streaming music needs a paid Spotify account.

Step 2: Create a PlaylistWhen you initially open up Party Pooper, you will need to sign in using your Spotify credentials. The first screen that you land on will display a list of all the public channels created, but we're not worried about those right now. Select the addition symbol to create your own channel and decide whether you want it to be public or private.

Step 3: Add Your SongsTo add a song to your newly created channel, simply swipe to the right. Since it's connected to your Spotify account, you will see "Your music" and any playlists you've created. Just tap on a song to add it to your channel and the music will start playing as soon as the first song is selected.

Step 4: Invite Your FriendsTo add your friends, swipe to the left from within the channel and select the three-dot menu icon. You can email or message friends, whatever works for you, and anyone can tap and hold on tracks to add them to their own Spotify playlist.Although you need a premium account to listen to music, any regular Spotify user can be invited and partake in the group chat, voting, and adding of songs. Before your pal selects the link you send them, make sure they have Party Pooper installed on their device.

Step 5: Rock the VoteOn the "Now playing" page within the channel, you and your invited guests will see track info, album art, and the Pump (keep it) or Poop (skip it) options.Once a track starts, everyone will have thirty seconds to vote. Depending on whether the track gets more poops than pumps, it will either be skipped or played entirely. A stalemate will result in the song being played. Granted, you may not be utilizing this application every day, but it definitely creates a new experience while enjoying some music with friends. Also, it's hard for someone to whine about the song when it was voted on by your peers.Let us know what you think of the app in the comment section below, or drop us a line on Facebook, Google+, or Twitter.

Understanding OLED: The Difference Between LG's POLED & Samsung's AMOLED Screens

Understanding OLED: The Difference Between LG's POLED & Samsung's AMOLED Screens

With the recent launch of the LG V30 and the Pixel 2 XL, LG has reintroduced the world to POLED. This display tech was showcased at CES 2015 and billed as a rival to Samsung's AMOLED displays, then promptly disappeared from the market for two years. But now that two of the biggest flagship phones this year are using the technology, many folks will be wondering what makes POLED different.First off, both of these display technologies are OLED, which means they provide vibrant colors and fantastic contrast. Several years ago, both Samsung and LG showed off flexible displays that could bend and roll up. According to a recent announcement by Samsung, we could be seeing this technology in mainstream devices next year.LG has been using OLED in their televisions for years, but their return to smartphone OLED panels is exciting. With more than one supplier for OLED screens, more pressure will be placed OEMs such as HTC and Essential to use a more modern technology in their devices' displays.Don't Miss: How to Tell if Your Phone Has an OLED or LCD Screen (& Why It Matters) LG's Flexible OLED display. Image by Engadget/YouTube

What Is OLED?OLED stands for organic light-emitting diode. An OLED screen is essentially comprised of millions of tiny LEDs (light-emitting diodes) that can produce light and colors individually. This is different than traditional LCD display technology, which uses a backlight to illuminate the entire display and a color filter to create the colors shown on your screen. The individual diodes in an OLED panel are also able to turn off completely, allowing for deeper blacks than LCD, which has to block out the backlight to create a black image. However, a portion of light escapes, which is why blacks typically look grey on LCD. Image by Dallas Thomas/Gadget Hacks Compared to LCD, OLED provides richer colors with superior contrast. Black images are better displayed due to the pixels' ability to turn off diodes, enabling an image that better reflects the original subject.OLED also provides better viewing angles, with the potential for unshifted colors even when viewing almost parallel to the display. OLED has a much faster response time (the duration of performing an input and the screen reacting to it) than LCD, which already can achieve 1 ms. The potential refresh rate (the rate at which a display updates) is also significantly higher than LCD, which has a current max of 240 Hz.

What's the Difference Between OLED & AMOLEDWhen Samsung introduced the world to AMOLED, the "AM" stood for Active Matrix, indicating the shift to more energy-efficient models needed for the mobile nature of smartphones. Currently, all OLED displays use Active Matrix, which, using a capacitor and a thin-film transistor (TFT), allows each pixel to operate individually at the right voltage.Previously, OLED used a passive wiring matrix, which provided current to rows of LEDs one at a time and used more electricity. Active Matrix is not only more efficient than passive wiring matrices, but in certain instances, even LCD. For example, when producing a primarily black image, OLED will consume significantly less power since its LEDs would be off, compared to LCD where the light would simply be blocked. AMOLED vs LCD

What the Difference Between POLED & AMOLED?When it comes to the true differences between AMOLED and POLED, the real answer is simply "marketing." Nonetheless, I'll explain in more detail, because that doesn't quite do the story justice. The "P" in POLED stands for "plastic," the material used for the back substrate where the thin-film transistors (TFT) and OLED are placed. Traditionally, glass is used for the back substrate due to its better optical properties. The problem with glass that it is a very rigid material, which presented manufacturers difficulties when trying to form new shapes.Don't Miss: How to Save Battery When Playing Music on Your OLED deviceWith consumers' demand for thinner bezels rising in recent years, manufacturers were forced look for new materials to create this substrate. Due to this demand, plastic was introduced as a replacement. Plastic substrates are much more flexible than glass, allowing for easier (and more cost efficient) modification to create new shapes such as rounded corners. Plastic substrates are also much thinner than glass substrates, and they provide better shock absorption.Currently, Samsung achieves the Infinity Display on the Galaxy S8 and S8+ using a plastic substrate and an active matrix panel, just like the LG V30. Then why doesn't LG just called their display AMOLED? P-OLED vs AMOLED While we can only speculate, LG probably wishes to differentiate themselves from Samsung, who has heavily marketed the AMOLED name. By calling it POLED, they garner attention from readers like you to learn what makes each display unique, and (like Samsung) can associate their devices with a display technology to help make marketing easier. But this doesn't mean both phones' displays will be identical. Similar to how LCD panels are not equivalent between different manufacturers, OLEDs using similar methods don't display image the same — so many more components are involved with the production of images on your smartphone's screen. LG and Samsung use different materials for the light emitting diodes and other components. They also arrange the pixels differently, which plays a bigger role in the differences between devices' displays.

Screen Burn-InNow we can't discuss OLED without addressing the elephant in the room: Screen burn-in. At the time of this writing, Google's recently-released Pixel 2 XL has an issue with screen burn-in within a week of usage. Unfortunately, LG manufactured OLED screen have had this problem since the G Flex 2. Check the link below for extensive reporting on all the known issues of the POLED display in the LG V30 and Pixel 2 XL, including updates by Google or LG.Don't Miss: 5 Things We Learned from the Pixel 2 XL POLED Display Debacle Screen Burn-in on Pixel XL. Image by Dallas Thomas/Gadget Hacks Screen burn-in is an issue with both AMOLED and P-OLED. Individual LEDs decay during normal usage, and since LEDs operate independently, they decay at different rates. However, you can take measures to fix already burnt-in screens and reduce their occurrence in general. The link below discusses potential fixes and preventative measures for the Galaxy S8's AMOLED screen, but the methods are applicable to any OLED screen.Don't Miss: How to Fix OLED Screen Burn-in & Prevent it From Happening AgainOverall, POLED and AMOLED have more similarities than differences. The best part is that as consumers, we win. With LG now becoming a big player in the OLED space for smartphones, other manufacturers will have more incentive to include either company's OLED display in their next flagship phone — we've already seen this shift with the introduction of the iPhone X. If your phone has an unlocked bootloader, you can use Fastboot commands to flash factory images. Instead, it's best to use Odin to flash firmware on a Samsung device, and we've covered that process at the following link.Don't Miss: How to Flash Stock Firmware on Your Samsung Device Using Odin
Step 1: Install ADB & Fastboot on Your ComputerFirst, you'll have to install ADB and Fastboot on your computer, which are the utilities that let you flash images using Fastboot commands. There are several "one-click" and "light" versions of ADB and Fastboot made by third-parties, but I wouldn't recommend using these because they're not updated as frequently as the official utilities, so they might not be fully compatible with newer devices.Instead, your best bet is to install either the Android SDK Tools, which contains ADB and Fastboot, or just ADB and Fastboot, from Google. No matter if you choose the full package or just the platform tools themselves, they're the real deal. I've outlined the install process for Windows, Mac, and Linux in Method 1 at the following guide, so head over there to get started.Don't Miss: How to Install ADB & Fastboot on Windows, Mac, or Linux

Step 2: Enable OEM UnlockingIn order to flash images using Fastboot, your device's bootloader will need to be unlocked. If you've already done this, you can skip ahead to Step 3.But before you can unlock your bootloader, there's a setting that you'll need to enable if your device shipped with Android Marshmallow or higher preinstalled. To access this setting, start by enabling the Developer options menu on your phone or tablet. Once you've done that, open the Developer options menu, then enable the switch next to "OEM unlocking," and you'll be good to go. If this option is not present on your device, it's likely that your device didn't ship with Android Marshmallow or higher preinstalled. However, if the option is present but grayed out, this usually means that your bootloader cannot be unlocked, which means you won't be able to flash images using Fastboot.

Step 3: Put Your Phone into Bootloader ModeIn order to run any Fastboot commands, your phone or tablet will need to be in bootloader mode. This process will vary depending on your device. For most phones, start by powering your device completely off. When the screen goes black, press and hold the volume down and power buttons simultaneously, and keep holding them for about 10 seconds. If that doesn't work, turn the phone off, then press and hold the volume down button. From there plug a USB data cable into your PC, then simply wait a few seconds. If that still didn't work, try repeating the USB cable method, but this time use the volume up button.Within moments, you should be greeted by Android's Bootloader menu, which should look something like this: Bootloader mode on the Pixel XL. Image by Dallas Thomas/Gadget Hacks When you see this screen, make sure your phone or tablet is plugged into your computer with a USB data cable. Aside from that, leave the device alone, as the rest of the work will be done on the computer side of things.

Step 4: Open an ADB Shell on Your ComputerNavigate to the ADB and Fastboot installation directory on your computer. For Windows users, this can usually be found at C:\Program Files (x86)\Android\android-sdk\platform-tools. For Mac and Linux users, it depends on where you extracted your ADB folder when you installed the utility, so search your hard drive for the platform-tools folder if you've forgotten. From here, if you're using a Windows PC, hold down the shift button on your keyboard, then right-click any empty space and choose "Open command window here." For Mac and Linux users, simply open a Terminal window, then change directories to the platform-tools folder inside of your ADB installation directory.

Step 5: Unlock the BootloaderThis next step is something you only need to do once, so if your bootloader is already unlocked, you can skip ahead. Otherwise, you'll need to run a single Fastboot command—but note that this will wipe all data on your device. Before we get into this part, note that I'll be listing the commands for Windows users. Mac users will have to add a period and a slash (./) before each of these commands, and Linux users will have to add a slash (/) to the front. So from the ADB shell, type the following command, then hit enter.fastboot devices If that returns a series of letters and numbers followed by the word "fastboot," then your device is connected properly and you're good to go. Otherwise, refer back to Step 1 to check your ADB and Fastboot installation, and ensure that your device is in bootloader mode as shown in Step 3. Next up, it's time to unlock your bootloader. Depending on the Android version your device shipped with, this will be done in one of two ways.So if your device shipped with Lollipop or lower pre-installed, enter the following command:fastboot oem unlock If your device shipped with Marshmallow or higher, type the following command, then hit enter:fastboot flashing unlock Sending the bootloader unlock command to a device that shipped with Marshmallow or higher. At this point, you'll see a message on your Android device asking if you're sure you'd like to unlock the bootloader. Make sure the "Yes" option is highlighted, and if it's not, use your volume keys to do so. From there, press the power button, then your bootloader will unlock and your phone will reboot back into Fastboot mode. Bootloader-unlock screen on the Nexus 6P. Image by Dallas Thomas/Gadget Hacks
Step 6: Download the Factory ImagesNow that your bootloader is unlocked, you're ready to start flashing factory images—but first, you'll have to download the actual images themselves. Below are some links to download the factory images package for common devices.Factory images for Nexus or Pixel devices Factory images for HTC devices Factory images for Motorola devices Factor images for OnePlus devices Factory images for Essential devices With each of the above links, simply locate your device model in the list, then download the latest available firmware on your computer. If your manufacturer is not listed here, try Googling "factory images for <phone name>."

Step 7: Flash the Factory ImagesNow it's time to flash the images. The first thing you'll want to do here is extract the factory images archive that you downloaded from your manufacturer's website. For that part, I'd recommend using 7-Zip, as it's free and works with most archive formats. Extracting the factory images archive. Next, move all of the contents of the archive to the platform-tools folder inside of your ADB installation directory, then open an ADB Shell window in this folder. For more information on that, refer back to Step 4 above. Factory image files transferred to the platform-tools folder. Aside from that, there are two different approaches you can take when flashing the images. I'll outline both of them in separate sections below.

Option 1: Use the Flash-All ScriptMost factory images packages will contain a "flash-all" script that applies all of the images in one fell swoop. If you're trying to recover your device from a soft brick, this is the simplest way to go. However, it will unroot your device and wipe all existing data, so if you'd rather avoid that, see Option 2 below. But to run the flash-all script, type the following line into the command prompt, then hit enter:flash-all Sending the "flash-all" command. The process will take a few minutes, but when it's done, your phone should automatically reboot and you'll be running complete, 100% stock firmware.

Option 2: Extract the Images & Flash Them IndividuallyFor a second option, you can flash the system images individually. This method takes some extra work, but it can be used to un-root, update, or un-brick your device without losing existing data.Start by extracting any additional archives from the factory images package. Sometimes, factory images packages can contain a series of three or four nested archives, so make sure to unzip all of them. From there, copy all of the image files to the main platform-tools folder—in other words, don't leave them in any sub-folders. All images extracted from factory images package into platform-tools folder. From here, there are two images that you can get rid of: cache.img and userdata.img. These are the images that will overwrite your data and cache with blank space, so if you don't flash them, your existing data will remain intact.Of the remaining images, six make up the core elements of Android: boot, bootloader, radio, recovery, system, and vendor. The boot image contains the kernel, so if you just want to get rid of a custom kernel that's causing issues with your device, you only have to flash this one. To do that, type the following command into the ADB shell window:fastboot flash boot <boot image file name>.img Next is the bootloader image—this is the the interface that you're using to flash images with Fastboot commands. So to update your bootloader, type:fastboot flash bootloader <bootloader image file name>.img Once you've done that, you should reload the bootloader so that you can continue flashing images on the newer version. To do that, type:fastboot reboot-bootloader After that, we have the radio image. This one controls connectivity on your device, so if you're having problems with Wi-Fi or mobile data, or if you just want to update your radio, type:fastboot flash radio <radio image file name>.img Then there's recovery. This is something you may or may not want to flash, depending on the modifications you've made. For example, if you've installed TWRP custom recovery, flashing this image will overwrite your modification and replace it with the stock recovery interface. So if you're just updating your modded device, you should skip this one. Otherwise, if you plan to keep your phone stock and want the newer version of stock recovery, type:fastboot flash recovery <recovery file name>.img Next up is the big one: The system image. This one contains all of the files that make up the actual Android OS. As such, it's the most essential part of any update. However you may not be updating your phone. You may just be re-flashing the stock firmware to recover from a soft brick. If this is the case, the system image is often the only image you need to flash in order to fix everything, because it contains the entirety of Android. In other words, if you flash this image and nothing else, it will undo any changes you made with root access and put everything back the way it was.So as a cure-all in most soft brick situations, or as a method for getting the core part of an Android update, type:fastboot flash system <system file name>.img Finally, there's the vendor image. This is only present on newer phones, so don't worry if it's not in your factory images package. But if it's there, it contains a few important files, so type the following line to get this partition updated:fastboot flash vendor <vendor file name>.img After you've sent any or all of the above commands, you'll be ready to restart your device and boot into Android. To do that, type:fastboot reboot Flashing the factory images individually. At this point, your device should be fully updated, or if you were trying to recover from a soft brick, it should be running flawlessly. And since you now know what each of the core system images actually does, you'll have a better sense of how Android works going forward.Flashing factory images individually has helped me understand more about Android than any other mod or process. If you think about it, Android is just a series of images written to flash storage, and now that you've dealt with each of them individually, you should be able to identify and resolve root-related issues a lot easier.Follow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, and YouTube Follow Android Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Google+

News: iOS 11.3 Update Ruins 3D Touch on iPhones

News: iOS 11.3 Update Ruins 3D Touch on iPhones
It's no secret that iOS 11 is one buggy piece of software. Remarkably, even after three major updates, we're still seeing issues with our iPhones. This time, the glitches have come for 3D Touch on iPhones running the new iOS 11.3 update. The issue occurs when locking an iPhone from the home screen. When unlocking the iPhone with Touch ID or Face ID, 3D Touch is disabled momentarily. If you try to use the feature on an app icon immediately after unlocking your iPhone, your device will simply prompt you to edit the home screen. If you move the screen or wait a couple seconds (or exit edit mode if you unintentionally opened that), 3D Touch usually starts working.
The issue also appears with notifications on the lock screen. If attempting to preview with 3D Touch, iOS 11.3 will simply open and launch the notification. However, unlike the home screen, the lock screen issue varies from device to device. Our iPhone X would sometimes allow you to use 3D Touch on notifications after waiting some time, but an iPhone 8 Plus wouldn't work at all. Our other iPhone 8 Plus, as well as our iPhone 7 Plus, had no lock screen problems whatsoever. While the lock screen bugs appear intermittent, we can confirm the home screen 3D Touch issue exists on iPhone X, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone 7 Plus models running 11.3. However, we expect all iPhones running this version of iOS will experience them as well. Disabling 3D Touch, force-starting the device, then re-enabling the feature does not fix anything. While not the worst iOS bug we've seen this time around, we're hoping Apple issues a quick 11.3.2 fix for this glitch (iOS 11.3.1 did not fix this issue). Considering 11.3 went through six beta versions over two months, one would expect Apple to catch these bugs with some speed. However, even though the first and second iOS 11.4 beta did not fix these issues either, iOS 11.4 beta 3 finally did, indicating the fix will likely come to everyone with iOS 11.4 and not 11.3.2. If you can't wait any longer, you can join the public beta and update to iOS 11.4 beta 3.Don't Miss: 23 Cool New Features in iOS 11.3 for iPhoneFollow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Flipboard Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Flipboard

News: Your iPhone's Lock Screen Is Getting Better Widgets, Notifications, & More in iOS 10

Your iPhone's lock screen is about to get a major upgrade in iOS 10, as shown off by Apple at WWDC '16, and it will make dealing with notifications and apps a breeze. Image via Apple The new lock screen has been fully redesigned to give users better and faster interaction with the apps they need. It's also snappier and more aesthetically pleasing with notifications no longer darkening the wallpaper.Don't Miss: Siri's Awesome New Powers in iOS 10's Keyboard Image via Apple You can interact directly with notifications, and even expand them using 3D Touch to see more details and ways to respond or take action. For example, you can accept calendar invites or expand a message and chat in real time. This will also work with third-party apps that incorporate this functionality, such as Uber. Once you hail an Uber, you'll get the instant notification, and using 3D Touch, you immediately get an exact fix on how far away it is through Maps.(Devices without 3D Touch could eventually get these features as well, and we're fairly certain there will be a option to turn this off for privacy-minded users.) Images via Apple You can also finally clear all notifications with 3D Touch, not just day by day. Images via Apple The update also changes how you access widgets, as well as gives new and improved widgets. Instead of bringing the Notification Center down and choosing the Today view, you just slide over from the left to reveal your widgets. You can hit "Show More" to see more details, and you can even tap apps to open them up. Images via Apple There's also a revamped Control Center that you can access from the lock screen, which separates the music player on its own screen, as well as a new way to access the Camera (slide over from the right). The new lock screen features will be available to developers beginning today, and all users will get access once the upgrade is available in the fall after a public beta period.Follow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, and YouTube Follow Apple Hacks on Facebook and Twitter Follow Android Hacks on Facebook and Twitter Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, and Google+

Cheap Phones Ranked: The 4 Most Durable Budget Phones for Clumsy People

Cheap Phones Ranked: The 4 Most Durable Budget Phones for Clumsy People

Clumsiness is the great equalizer when it comes to smartphones — it makes no distinction between the most expensive flagship handset and cheaper mid-range models. A hard drop onto pavement will usually result in a shattered screen, regardless of how pricey your device is. And with a smartphone breaking every two seconds, we're truly our own handset's ultimate nemesis.Thankfully, more and more manufacturers are realizing this unfortunate fact, so they've started using premium materials such as Gorilla Glass and aluminum frames even when their phones don't cost an arm and a leg. Not only does this give mid-tier handsets a more flagship feel, but it also improves their overall durability. With a huge variety of budget handsets available, we wanted to see which ones were more rugged and resistant to clumsiness. So we tested the most popular mid-range handsets and came up with a list of the four phones that were all but klutz-proof. After quite a bit of research and experimentation, here are our picks. Image by Amboy Manalo/Gadget Hacks Don't Miss: The 3 Best Gaming Phones Ranked
Key Comparison PointsOur primary goal was to determine which of the most popular current-generation handsets available in the US are ideally suited for people with clumsy tendencies. In order to do this, we came up with the following comparison points.Chassis: To strike that fine balance between aesthetics and durability, a phone must be well-made using quality materials to make this list. Handsets like the Nokia 6 that are clad in an aluminum unibody shell are ideal in this regard, as it offers maximum protection against drops, while giving the device a premium feeling on par with more expensive flagship phones. Glass Panel: Smartphones use different types of glass panels to protect their displays. These panels have varying degrees of anti-shatter and anti-scratch technologies, and the best protection available right now is Gorilla Glass 5. While we don't expect mid-level devices to sport the latest Gorilla Glass 5, we made sure to choose handsets that come standard with Gorilla Glass 3 or equivalent at a minimum. Fingerprint Sensor: The use of high-end materials on smaller components like the fingerprint sensor not only lends to a phone's premium feel, but also adds to the overall sturdiness of the handset. A scratched or cracked sensor can hinder a phone's ability to read fingerprints. Camera Lens: A scratched camera lens can affect a phone's photo quality, and a cracked lens can do the same, in addition to compromising a handset's resistance to water and other contaminants. A sapphire crystal lens is harder than glass, which makes this component more durable. Water Resistance: Unfortunately, today's mid-level handsets don't offer any official IP ratings for water and dirt resistance, mainly to keep their prices as low as possible. The Moto G5 Plus has a leg up over its competition in this regard, as it's coated with a water-repellent finish that offers some degree of protection against the elements. Removable Battery: Batteries will need to be replaced sooner or later, so devices with removable batteries (such as the US variant of the Galaxy J7 Prime) hold an advantage over the rest of the phones in this list. Apart from that, handsets with removable batteries are significantly safer and easier to perform repairs on, so you usually won't pay as much when you need something fixed. Screen Replacement: Shattered screens are the most common reason a phone comes in for repairs, so it's important to know how easy it is to replace a phone's screen assembly. The easier it is to replace a screen, the less risk there will be in breaking other components while performing the repair. To gauge this repair's overall difficulty, we determined which handsets required the fewest steps to safely replace a screen assembly. Charging Port Replacement: The charging port is another major component that's likely to break due to wear and tear from its constant cycle of plugging and unplugging. Thankfully, more and more handsets, regardless of price, are taking the modular approach in terms of engineering, making repairs on smaller parts such as charging ports easier to perform. Screen Assembly Price: Affordable spare parts translate to cheaper repairs, giving the user more incentive to repair his or her shattered device. Data for parts was sourced from Parts4Repair and Mobile Defenders. Screen assemblies (made up of the LCD display and protective glass panel) were given as primary examples, since these parts represent a majority of mobile repairs. Please note that prices listed are only for the part alone and subject to change. Drop Tests: Drop tests are usually done in varying heights, starting from about three feet, and they help us see how well a handset will hold up if it takes a tumble. The data listed here was sourced from various YouTube channels. As we found no drop tests done on the stateside variant of the J7 Prime, we decided to analyze tests done on the international version of the J7, paying very close attention to front-facing drops due to their similarity. Water Immersion Test: These tests involve immersing a device in a bowl of water, usually lasting about a minute, to determine how well it's protected against liquid damage. The data here was also sourced from various YouTube channels. As we found no water immersion tests done on the stateside variant of the J7 Prime, we decided to analyze tests done on the international version of the J7 as they are similarly built, apart from the metal construction and non-removable battery found on the latter. Ergonomics: Ease of use is a vital feature that every great smartphone has. A phone that is easy to manipulate with one hand has fewer chances of accidental slips and falls. Key factors in determining a handset's ergonomics are how easy it is to grip, and the ease with which we can reach all corners of the screen and external keys with one hand. Slip Resistance: A smartphone's overall texture goes hand in hand with its ergonomics. To get this data, we used the same tilting rig we devised to determine the four best premium phones for clumsy people, which measured the angle (in degrees) where each phone started to slip on multiple surfaces, then averaged the numbers out.
How We Picked These PhonesWe had to set some ground rules to determine which handsets would make the cut. First, the handsets had to be current-generation mid-tier devices with prices ranging between $200 and $400, and they had to be available for purchase in the US at the time of this writing.Another important consideration in our final selection was overall build quality. A handset with a glass enclosure will naturally be more susceptible to shattering during a fall or a bad bend, so we had to rule out devices with glass backs, along with any phones that used a display panel made of Gorilla Glass 2 or less. Finally, we ruled out phones that needed to be completely disassembled in order to perform a screen repair. The likelihood of doing further damage to a phone with a cracked screen increases with every extra step, especially if you intend on doing any repairs yourself. As a result, we disqualified these potential contenders for not meeting our criteria:Alcatel Idol 5s (glass enclosure, parts hard to find) Apple iPhone 5s (discontinued) Asus Zenfone 3 Zoom (complete disassembly for screen repair) Huawei Honor 6x (front glass not scratch resistant, failed durability test) Huawei Honor 8 (glass enclosure, complete disassembly for screen repair) Sony Xperia XA Ultra (plastic lens, complete disassembly for screen repair) ZTE Axon 7 Mini (complete disassembly for screen repair, parts hard to find) ZTE ZMax Pro (poor ergonomics, complete disassembly for screen repair) You don't have to be an expert to know how fluid the mobile industry is nowadays. In a never-ending bid to outdo each other, major companies like Samsung are constantly releasing ever more advanced smartphones that will inevitably render some handsets on this list obsolete. That said, we'll be sure to update this article as soon as upcoming devices like the IP68-rated Moto X4 and aluminum-clad Samsung Galaxy C7 touch down stateside for us to analyze and review.

Phone 1. iPhone SEReleased back in March 2016, the iPhone SE still continues to be Apple's sole entry-level smartphone for budget-minded consumers. The iPhone SE is basically an iPhone 6s crammed into a 5s frame, and despite its age, it's undoubtedly the most popular budget handset out there. Thanks to its 64-bit architecture and modern internals, the SE will be supported by Apple well into the future, including the upcoming iOS 11 and subsequent incremental updates. With a starting price of $399, though, the SE is the most expensive smartphone to make our list. Image by Amboy Manalo/Gadget Hacks The SE sports premium materials such as an almost-all aluminum unibody frame and high quality ion-strengthened glass that's equivalent to at least Gorilla Glass 3 in terms of resistance to cracks and scratches. The iPhone SE is the only handset in this list that uses sapphire crystal for its camera lens, albeit impure. According to JerryRigEveryting, the camera lens in an iPhone SE is actually a mixture of sapphire crystal and glass, and contains trace amounts of carbon and silicon that make it less resistant to cracks and scratches.Don't Miss: Check Your iPhone for 32-Bit Apps That Won't Work in iOS 11Anyone who's ever owned Apple's 5s series handsets will feel right at home with the iPhone SE, as they share the same dimensions. Coming in at 4.87 x 2.31 x 0.30 inches in size, the iPhone SE is hands down the most ergonomic phone in our list. Button placement is also intuitive, with very minimal hand movement required to reach out for its external keys. When it comes to overall repairability, the iPhone SE reigns supreme over the handsets in this list. The SE is very easy to disassemble — simply unscrew the bottom screws, then pry the screen assembly off the housing while being careful not to tear the home button cable located on the bottom. From there, simply unscrew the reinforcement plate and unplug the connectors to separate the screen assembly from the housing. iPhone SE opened up, with the LCD assembly connector plate removed. Image by JerryRigEverything/YouTube Screen assemblies for the iPhone SE are incredibly easy to find, and with an average price of $25, it's the cheapest to repair out of all the phones in the list. Just note that small components, such as the home button and earpiece/proximity sensor assembly, will need to be transplanted onto the new assembly, so care must be taken when performing this repair.Because of how easy it is to open the SE up, repairs on other parts, such as the battery and charging port, are also simple when compared to the other phones in this list. The parts are modular, and replacing a broken charging ports is just a matter of removing screws that hold the part in place. The iPhone SE performed very well in drop tests, as shown by EverythingApplePro. The device survived drops ranging from about three feet to six feet onto pavement, with the screen finally succumbing from about a 10-foot drop. The housing also bent under the strain of multiple drops from about 10 feet, which also caused the top of the housing to separate from the beating it took. Bent housing on an SE after a drop from 10 feet. Image by EverythingApplePro/YouTube A durability test by JerryRigEverything on the iPhone SE showed the handset bending under strain, exposing the weak spots in the SE's aluminum frame, namely the thin areas around the volume keys and the SIM card tray. Though the SE is easy enough to bend back into shape in the event of an accident, the areas mentioned will remain deformed, so we recommend not keeping your iPhone SE in you rear pocket and sitting on it. Image by JerryRigEverything/YouTube The iPhone SE has no official IP ratings for water and dirt resistance, so appropriate care must be taken whenever you're near water. Due to its tight tolerances, the SE should offer some degree of protection against unforeseen occurrences like getting caught in the rain, though more severe exposure to liquid such as an accidental drop in the sink will lead to severe damage of the device.Don't Miss: Tips from a Tech: Save Money on iPhone Repairs by Knowing Your Options

Phone 2. Nokia 6Finland-based HMD Global secured the rights to manufacture phones under the legendary Nokia brand in 2016, then released their first Android device shortly after in January 2017. The Nokia 6 definitely didn't disappoint — it sold out in one minute when the first batch became available. Starting out at an incredibly reasonable $229 (almost half the price of an iPhone SE), you get a powerful smartphone with external specs on par with flagship models. The Nokia 6 runs Android 7.1.1 Nougat out the box, and there's a promised update to 8.0 Oreo on the way. So while HMD doesn't have much of a track record yet when it comes to updating phones, it appears the Nokia 6 is the most future-proof device in this list in terms of software, which is a huge bonus given that there's no successor to the Nokia 6 on the horizon yet. Image by Amboy Manalo/Gadget Hacks The Nokia 6 stands out for its build quality and materials used. Its main housing is milled from a single block of aluminum, which gives it strength and rigidity when compared to phones that use a pressed aluminum housing. The Nokia 6 is the largest handset in our list, measuring 6.06 x 2.98 x 0.31 in inches. Despite its size, the 6 is relatively easy to use with one hand thanks to its design. Its width is greatly offset by a gently sloping back, making it comfortable to grip. The texture on the housing has a subtle grit to it that's apparent when held, giving the user a very secure feeling when holding the handset. Image by Amboy Manalo/Gadget Hacks The beautifully engineered Nokia 6 gets high marks for overall durability. The use of Corning Gorilla Glass 3 and high quality aluminum gives it superb protection against drops, dings, and bending. One notable durability test performed by JerryRigEverything showed the Nokia 6's incredible resistance to bending, leaving the YouTuber to declare the device as a "definite contender for the most durable phone of 2017."Don't Miss: The 4 Best Phones for Music Lovers — Under $400Spare parts are available and relatively easy to source online, though they aren't as widespread compared to the iPhone SE and J7 Prime. With an average screen price of $67, the cost of repairing a Nokia 6 with a shattered screen is quite reasonable and won't put too much of a dent in your wallet. As far as overall repairability is concerned, the Nokia 6 is a double-edged sword. As JerryRigEverything's video clearly shows, replacing a damaged screen assembly on a Nokia 6 is incredibly easy — simply heat up and remove the display assembly, unscrew a locking plate and unplug the connector, then install the new screen. From a repair technician's perspective, you couldn't ask for anything more! The Nokia 6 with the screen assembly off. Image by JerryRigEverything/YouTube However, replacing a charging port or another damaged internal component can be problematic, as the display assembly is very thin and fragile. This means it can easily be damaged during removal, which is necessary to access the rest of the phone. Though parts are modular and very easy to replace once inside, we would highly recommend letting an experienced technician repair broken charging ports or replace batteries due to the high risk of breaking the display. The lack of any water resistance rating against liquids and dirt means care must be taken when using your Nokia 6 when around water. Unlike higher end flagships like the upcoming Nokia 8, we highly recommend not taking the 6 to the shower with you to listen to music.Don't Miss: Meet the Nokia 8 — The First Android Flagship from the Iconic Brand

Phone 3. Moto G5 PlusThe Moto G5 Plus may not be at the top of this list, but don't let that fool you into thinking that it's somehow less durable than the iPhone SE or Nokia 6. In many respects, the Moto G5 Plus outshines both phones in terms of overall durability. A relatively new device that touched down in April 2017, the Moto G5 Plus can be purchased at around $230.It lags behind when it comes to software and future-proofing with an already-outdated Android 7.0 Nougat as its OS. And Motorola's new parent company Lenovo has demonstrated that they're not capable of handling updates well. But since this list is mostly about hardware, the Moto G5 Plus is still a great choice if you're looking for a beautifully built and sturdy handset on a budget. Those who value online security, however, may want to look to the Nokia 6 or iPhone SE due to their updated and secure software. Image by Amboy Manalo/Gadget Hacks The G5 Plus has a thoughtful design that utilizes a plastic frame with a metallic finish, which is accentuated by an aluminum rear plate and buttons. So it's no surprise that the handset performed the best overall on drop tests. A notable series of tests done by Wit Rigs showed the device surviving drops from heights ranging from three to more than six feet onto stone tiles and pavement, all without so much as a crack in the display. The plastic frame acts as a shock absorber that prevents energy from transferring over to the glass panel in a fall, particularly in in corner drops, which helps protect the screen from shattering upon impact. Despite sporting a plastic frame, the Moto G5 Plus is highly resistant to bending, thanks to two metal plates — one in the rear, and another situated between the motherboard and display assembly — that greatly aid in the handset's overall structural rigidity. Note the plate covering the motherboard, which keeps the Moto G5 Plus resistant to bending. Image by Fixez/YouTube The Moto G5 Plus is also the only handset in this list that offers some form of protection against water and dirt. Though it doesn't bear an official IP rating against the elements, the handset is finished with a water repellent nano-coating to help defend against light splashes. Though the Moto G5 Plus was the only handset in this list to survive a water immersion test of about one minute without any instant or visible damage, we would still caution against careless use when around water or other liquids.Don't Miss: The 4 Best Fitness-Friendly Phones for Working OutIn terms of screen repair, the Moto G5 Plus is comparable to the Nokia 6, with one notable difference. Like the Nokia 6, disassembly starts by the separating the display from its housing through careful heating and prying. The key difference is that the Moto G5 Plus's display connectors lie underneath the metal reinforcement plating, which will then need to be removed in order to safely unplug the display and sensor connectors to completely separate the two assemblies. This extra step makes replacing the screen a little bit trickier compared to the Nokia 6. Though the average screen price is quite reasonable at around $45, the extra labor involved will probably bring the repair price up to around the same cost as that of the Nokia 6.Another key weakness becomes apparent once the G5 Plus is fully disassembled: A complete lack of modularity. Unlike the Nokia 6 and iPhone SE, the G5 Plus comes with its Micro USB port soldered directly onto the motherboard. If the charging port ever fails, it'll need to be taken to a technician that specializes in solder reworking. The G5 Plus' motherboard — note the soldered-on charging port on the right-hand side. Phone 4. Galaxy J7 PrimeWith the Note 8 and Galaxy S8 garnering all the acclaim and attention, it's easy to overlook the other great smartphones Samsung offers. In fact, we often forget that Samsung has plenty of entry-level and mid-range smartphones that feature decent specs that will surely meet the needs of the average consumer. Not to be confused with the international model of the same name, the US version of the Galaxy J7 Prime (also known as the Galaxy J7 V or Galaxy J7 2017) was released back in March 2017 and runs Android 7.0.1. Despite its relative weakness in terms of future-proofing due to a lack of OS and security updates, the $275 phone still gives budget-oriented users plenty of bang for their buck. That said, users who value online security may be better suited with the Nokia 6 or iPhone SE. Image by Amboy Manalo/Gadget Hacks Featuring a plastic shell enclosure, the Galaxy J7 Prime doesn't feel as premium as the other phones in this list, but this is somewhat offset by a Gorilla Glass 4 display panel that gives it a greater degree of protection against screen cracks. And despite having a plastic shell, the J7 Prime is still fairly rigid and offers decent protection against bending, thanks to a thick inner frame that houses the motherboard. As there were no drop tests available for the U.S. version of the J7 Prime, we had to turn to drop tests done on its closest relative, the metal-bodied J7 Prime Duos, paying close attention to front-facing drop tests as they would apply to the stateside J7 variant. In drop tests done by XeeTechCare, the J7 Prime's screen survived intact from a front-facing drop at a height of at least 4 feet.Don't Miss: The 4 Best Phones for Binge-Watching Netflix & HuluThe J7 Prime is also the only handset in this list that features a removable battery, which gives you a lot more flexibility in terms of battery swaps due wear and tear, or having spares to switch batteries to get the most out of your device. This feature also makes the J7 Prime the safest in this list to disassemble with regards to minimizing accidental electrical shortage, which can cause irreparable damage to the phone. Image by Amboy Manalo/Gadget Hacks Like the Nokia 6, the J7 Prime's overall repairability has its shares of up and downs. In terms of screen replacement, the the J7 Prime tops the list due to its design. With a careful balance of heating and prying to loosen adhesive, the screen assembly will pop out, then it can be replaced after simply unplugging the ribbon connector and fastener. As easy as screen replacements are, however, the J7 Prime has the most expensive screen assembly on this list. With an average display assembly price of $135, expect to pay a premium on screen repairs. The J7 Prime also shares the same inherent risks as the Nokia 6 and Moto G5 Plus as far as repairing a broken charging port or other parts due to its design. The paint underneath the glass panel can be easily scratched off, especially if using a metal pry tool. To complicate matters further, the charging port on a J7 Prime is directly soldered into the motherboard similar to the Moto G5 Plus. Therefore, we highly recommend taking the J7 Prime to an experienced technician for repairs performed under the hood. The J7 Prime's charging port is soldered onto the motherboard. Image by Jose Morales/YouTube Unlike its more famous flagship models, Samsung doesn't have an official IP rating for the J7 Prime in terms of water and dust resistance. The J7 Prime has looser tolerances as far as build quality is concerned, most notably around its rear housing due to its removable battery. An accidental drop in the toilet bowl will not only be gross, but will most likely translate to severe damage to the J7 Prime, so extreme caution must be taken when using the handset around water.Don't Miss: Galaxy Note 8 Revealed — Dual Cameras, 6 GB RAM, Bixby & More
ConclusionThough the iPhone SE won out in the end according to our research, it was by no means decisive. The Nokia 6 bested it in terms of structural integrity thanks to its rigid main housing, while the Motorola Moto G5 Plus proved to be the most resistant to screen damage. The J7 Prime is arguably safer to repair than the others thanks to its removable battery.Honestly, any of the phones in this list would make a perfect digital companion for folks who find themselves frequently dropping their phones. Not only should they all hold up to the daily grind, but even if they do end up breaking, repairs shouldn't cost an arm and a leg.Which mid-range smartphone would you recommend to your clumsy loved ones?
