Creative Commons is awesome—really. If an image, video, or audio file is tagged with a CC license, that means you can use it as long as you give appropriate credit to the owner. For bloggers with no money for pricey stock media, it's a godsend. When you license your own media under CC, you can choose how you want it to be used by others and whether or not it can be used commercially.
Types of Creative Common LicensesThere are six different types of licenses:Attribution (CC BY): Allows any type of use (including derivative works and commercial use) as long as the original is credited. Attribution-ShareAlike (CC BY-SA): Allows any credited use as long as the new work based on the original is also CC licensed. Attribution-NoDerivs (CC BY-ND): Allows any redistribution (including commercial) as long as the original work is unchanged. Attribution-NonCommercial (CC BY-NC): Allows any credited use that is not for commercial purposes. Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike (CC BY-NC-SA): Allows any non-commercial use as long as new works are CC licensed. Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs (CC BY-NC-ND): Allows downloading and non-commercial use with credit, but the original work cannot be changed in any way. The different types of licenses mean that you can be really picky about how your work is used and ensures that you always get credit for it. The only downside to Creative Commons is that it can be hard to find high-quality CC media because it's all so spread out. Here are some of the better places to look.

Free Images on InstagramUntil recently, licensing Instagram photos for republishing was a huge pain. You had to contact the photographer directly to ask for rights, and sometimes tracking them down could be difficult. Philip Neustrom decided to make the process easier with his new site (coded in less than a weekend) called I Am CC. If you're the photographer on Instagram, all you have to do is sign in through your Instagram account and choose what type of license you want to use and your photos will be published under CC. The only real thing to note is that the service automatically releases all of your Instagram photos using a CC license for 3 months after you sign up. After those 3 months, you'll be reminded to renew, in case you suddenly decide that some photos are too personal for mass consumption. Of course, you can stop the service at any time, but you can't revoke access for pics that you've already licensed. For those looking for images, the site includes an API that lets you search for all of the CC-licensed Instagram images, which are normally difficult to find. If you don't want to license your own images, you can still browse the site without creating an account, or use the API (if your tech-savvy enough).

Searching for Creative Common ImagesA few major sites have searches that only bring up results for media that's licensed under Creative Commons. You'll probably find the biggest selection on Flickr, but you can also use Google's Advanced Search. Just click on the drop-down menu for usage rights (the very last option) and choose what type of image you're looking for. The Creative Commons website also has its own search that lets you choose which outlet you want to pull images from. It includes media from Flickr, Google, Fotopedia, YouTube, and several others.

Searching Wikimedia CommonsWikimedia Commons lets you search over 13 million media files and is probably the best place to look if you need photos for a school project. It's a free "media file repository making available public domain and freely-licensed educational media content" and can be edited by anyone, just like Wikipedia. It's great for photos of nature, historical artifacts, and places. You can also find some decent shots of celebrities and public figures.

Searching for Specific TopicsIf you're looking for a photo of something specific, there are several sites that only have images of certain things. Animal Photos has thousands of pictures sorted by category and lists the species of each animal, so it's easy to find what you're looking for. There are also similar sites for cars, locations, stock photos, and design elements like backgrounds, textures, and abstract images.
Large PublicationsSome really big sites like WIRED and Gawker have pages with their own CC licensed images. These are usually good quality images, and Gawker's images include those from all of its sister sites like Gizmodo, Kotaku, and io9. But just be aware that they only license their original photos, not ones that they've acquired elsewhere. A lot of universities (like UCLA) also publish media and research under CC licenses.There are tons of places to find Creative Commons media, but these are some of the best organized and easiest to use for images. Step 6: Repeat (If & When Necessary)As we mentioned before, this carrier-unlock method uses an exploit to change your iPhone's ICCID manually to accept a SIM card from an otherwise unsupported network. This trick, however, can be easily undone if you either update to the latest iOS version or force-restart your device. If you've performed the latter, you'll need to go through the steps highlighted above to unlock your iPhone again.Because of this, we recommend staying away from any iOS software updates to preserve your unlock, especially via iTunes. Some reports claim that updating over-the-air (OTA) preserves the hacked ICCID and thus your unlock, but we haven't been able to confirm it with absolute certainty. Disabling Autoplay Videos: Computer MethodTo stop the madness, log in to Facebook and click the small down arrow icon in the upper-right of your feed page. From the drop-down menu, select Settings. Now, turn Auto-Play Videos to Off and enjoy never having to see cops shooting dogs, babies singing in the back seats of cars, or any other stupid shit your friends think you need to see.

Disabling Autoplay Videos: iOS MethodTo disable this battery-robbing preset on Facebook's app for iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch, first go to your Facebook app, hit the More tab, select Settings, then Account Settings, and then Videos and Photos. Select the Autoplay option, then choose Never Play Videos Automatically. You could also select Use Wi-Fi Only if you're only worried about using too much data on your device. You could also select Smart Autoplay, but that's leaving the decision in Facebook's hands, and that's not something you should trust. Disabling Autoplay Videos: Android MethodIt's a little easier to disable on Android devices. When in your Facebook app, select the menu icon (the three-lines), then App Settings. If you use your Nexus 7 like me, then you're constantly downloading APKs, installing new games from Google Play, taking a million photos, and using multiple apps at the same time.While my device can handle all of this with ease, keeping track of all this activity has become a new task of its own. What I need is an easy, intuitive way of showing what recent activity has gone down on my Nexus, without having to manually go through my app drawer, downloads folder, or gallery. Today, instead of going over just another multitasker for your Nexus, I'll be showing you how to locate recent photos, downloads, installations, and application activity with one simple-to-use app called Recent (File manager assistant), by developer tomitools.

View Recent Activity Through the File BrowserOpen the application to view the simple interface with four categories: Recent installations, Recent downloads, Recent Photos, and Recent apps. Click on one to view all recent activity for that category. From the list view, you can check an entry and select one of the designated actions below, like Open, Uninstall, or Details. If you select a photo or download, you can also tap Locate and find the exact location on your device and even copy to clipboard.

One-Touch Navigation of Recent Activity on Your HomescreenNow that you've got the basics down, close the app to see its best feature. On your home screen, you will now have a small icon that looks like a little stick figure. You can tap and hold to move it from one side of the screen to the other, and simply tap it once to open the circular tasker. Tap on one of the four quadrants of the inner circle to view up to seven recent activity icons. Also, you can slide around the larger, black circle to cycle through categories as well. Some Minor Issues to NoteNot too much to complain about, but one main issue is when using the tasker and viewing recent Photos activity, only one photos shows up. I can tap on it to view all recent, but the tasker only shows one, which is minor.Additionally, this is an app that would benefit from some added preferences, as it currently doesn't have any. Maybe something along the lines of blacklisting apps, or setting a time restriction on what is dubbed "recent." Nonetheless, the app is fairly new and definitely makes scouring through your Nexus 7 much quicker and easier.

As you might expect, phone carriers brought the hammer down in an effort to stop users from getting around the fees they charge to normally allow you to do this.Luckily, the FCC has stepped in and has made Verizon stop its block on tethering apps. AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile users are unfortunately unaffected by this ruling, but if you have a Verizon plan (or you think that your carrier won't find out, which is likely), here's how you can easily turn your phone into an internet hotspot.
Step 1: Activate USB DebuggingGo into your Android phone's menu and select Settings --> Applications --> Development. In that window, check the box that says USB Debugging.
Step 2: Download PdaNetGo to the Google Play marketplace (previously the Android Market) and run a search for PdaNet, or just click here. Download and install that app.On the PC or laptop you want to give internet access to, go to the PdaNet website and download the appropriate free PdaNet version for your operating system.Note: PdaNet is free, but limits secure browsing. You can purchase the full version right now for $15.95.

Step 3: Connect Your Phone to Your ComputerConnect your phone to your computer with a USB cable. Then run the PdaNet app on your phone and choose Enable USB Tether.
