How To: Find Stored Usernames, Emails, & Passwords on Safari

How To: Find Stored Usernames, Emails, & Passwords on Safari

Every time you log in to a website in Safari on iOS, you're also asked if you would like to save the username and password—a great feature of just about all browsers that makes it so that don't have to enter your credentials each time you access website in the future. While this feature is great for quickly getting into all your favorite websites, have you ever wondered where all those passwords are saved on your device? In this guide, I'll be showing you where to find all of the stored usernames, emails, and passwords so that you can easily manage them on iOS.

View Saved Safari PasswordsInside of your Settings apps, head over to Safari and tap on the Passwords option. Your iPhone will prompt you to either enter your lock screen passcode or use Touch ID to view your passwords. Inside of Passwords, you'll see a list of all of the websites that Safari has a password saved for, along with the username or email associated with them. When you select a website, you'll see the rest of the information, including the password and the URL of the website. Use this section to write down any forgotten usernames or passwords, in case you want to use those credentials to log in to your account on another device (your computer, a tablet, etc.).

Manually Add Website, Username, & PasswordOn top of automatically saving your username and password through Safari, you can also add them yourself. Inside of the Passwords settings page, there is an option to "Add Password" at the bottom. On the next page, you can enter the website URL (where you would enter your credentials), as well as your username and password. When you're finished, hit "Done" and your credentials will automatically be entered when you visit that website in Safari.

Deleting Saved PasswordsIf you don't want credentials to automatically appear for a certain website in Safari, simply delete it. In Passwords, hit "Edit," select the password you want to get rid of, then tap "Delete." A prompt will then appear asking if you're sure you want to delete the password. After the password is deleted, the credentials will no longer appear automatically when you navigate to that website. Instead you'll be asked if you want to save them all over again after you enter it manually, in which case, you'll either select "Never for This Website" or "Not Now" to stop it from being saved. If you have iCloud Keychain enabled, your passwords will sync to all of your approved devices. So if you delete a password on your iPhone, you may also delete it on your iPad, Mac, etc. More info on iCloud Keychain can be found here.

Disable AutofillFinally, you can disable Safari from saving all usernames and passwords. To do this, open the Settings app, tap on Safari, hit AutoFill, then disable the "Names and Passwords" option. You'll now have to manually enter your username and password each time that you enter a website. Enable "Names and Passwords" to get AutoFill back in Safari.Follow Apple Hacks over on Facebook and Twitter, or Gadget Hacks over on Facebook, Google+, and Twitter, for more Apple tips.

How To: Make an Anonymous Facebook Profile to Keep Your Personal Data Private

How To: Make an Anonymous Facebook Profile to Keep Your Personal Data Private

Between the Cambridge Analytica scandal and the revelation that Facebook logs your calls and text history on Android, many are considering joining the #DeleteFacebook movement. But it can be difficult to leave the site, because so much of its content is only available to active users. If you want to keep in the loop without sacrificing your privacy, you'll want to follow the steps below.First, let's get this out of the way: Nothing on the internet is truly private. All of us who sign up for Facebook should know that every friend we make, event we accept, and picture we view is logged and tracked by the company. However, there are steps we can take when creating a new profile that can severely limit the information Facebook has access to. In fact, other than your activity on the site, Facebook won't see any of your personal data.Don't Miss: How to Delete Your Facebook Account & Scrub Your Data

Step 1: Make a Burner Email or Phone NumberFirst, if you truly want to use Facebook off the grid, you'll need to sign up with an email account or phone number that is only used for your new profile. If you use a preexisting email account or phone number, your messages, search history, connected apps and more can potentially be fair-game for Facebook and its advertisers. The best practice here? Start from scratch. For a "burner" email, you can go about it a few ways. First, you can sign up for a new email account and only use it for creating your anonymous Facebook profile. You can choose whichever email service fits you best — the point is to make sure its only use is for your new Facebook account.Don't Miss: How to Open a New Gmail Account However, the more secure method is to take advantage of the Temp Email app. With this app, it will generate a temporary email address that isn't associated with you or your personal information. With this app, you will receive any emails sent to this email address such as any account verifications or confirmation codes. And when you don't need it, you can hit "change," essentially getting rid of email forever.Install Temp Mail: Android (free) | iOS (free) Since Facebook lets you register with a phone number, if you decide a burner email address is too much trouble, you can always create a burner phone number. Like the email, this is a fake temporary number which allows you to register for and use Facebook while protecting your data. There are several excellent choices on both the Play Store and App Store which we've already reviewed. In our testing, we found Hushed (Android | iOS) offers the best features for a burner number, but in the case of remaining anonymous, any of the apps on our list will do.Don't Miss: 4 Best Burner Phone Number Apps for Android & iPhone

Step 2: Use Island to Isolate Facebook (Android Only)When you create a Facebook account on your Android device, Facebook will grab as much information it can access. We already learned that Facebook found a way to still access call history without alerting the user and without requiring a permission dialog. This is why, to protect yourself, you should completely isolate the Facebook app from your data. You can do that by using an app which takes advantage of Android's Managed Profile feature.Island is an early access app which creates a sandboxed environment where you can clone apps and isolate them from your data. While it can't eliminate all data leakage (specifically device-bound data such as SMS and IMEI), it does prohibit apps from accessing information such as your call logs, contacts, and your photos.Play Store Link: Island (Unreleased) (free) So first, download Island from the Play Store. Open the app and select "Accept" and "Accept & continue" on the next page. A new page will appear telling you Island is creating a work profile. This is the sandboxed environment.Once completed, the main page will appear, which will include a few apps that are already installed in the sandboxed environment. To move Facebook to this environment, first make sure it's installed on your phone like a normal app, then select the Mainland tab at the bottom of Island's main menu. Now, select the Facebook app, and right above the navigation buttons, choose the crossed square. This will prompt you to allow Island to install the app. Select "Settings" and activate the toggle to enable the installation of the cloned app in the sandboxed environment. Once completed, return to the Island tab to see the Facebook app. You will also two versions of the app in your app drawer, the normal app and one with a suitcase icon on top of it (the cloned app). Now uninstall the app on the "mainland" by navigating to the "App Info" page of the version which doesn't have a small suitcase icon on top of the icon (most launchers let you do this by dragging the icon to the top of your home screen, then dropping it on "App Info"). From there, simply tap "Uninstall" or "Disable." This will leave you with only the cloned app, which is isolated thanks to the sandboxed environment.

Step 3: Detach Yourself from the Official Facebook AppThis step is somewhat optional, but after seeing how much personal data the Facebook app can harvest from some devices, you'll probably want to ditch the official Facebook app altogether. The best way to do this is by using either the Facebook mobile site or a Facebook wrapper app.If you're running Android, we recommend an app called Metal. It's a Facebook wrapper meant to replace the official Facebook app, and among other things, it blocks ads and uses less power than the official app. While it might not provide foolproof security, Metal won't request or use sensitive device permissions like its official counterpart. If you hop over to Settings > Permissions after installing it, you'll see Metal has no permissions enabled. Like the official app, we recommend installing Metal within Island.Play Store Link: Metal for Facebook & Twitter (free) If you're on iOS and are missing the Metal experience, consider using the Facebook mobile site instead. While you won't get native security features, Safari does come packed with some privacy settings installed. Plus, Facebook's app will drain your battery — if nothing else, using the mobile site will extend your iPhone's lifespan.Don't download the Facebook app — go to Facebook.com instead.

Step 4: Install a VPNEven with totally false credentials, Facebook can still track your location when using its service. While there are location settings to disable, if you want to make sure Facebook can't track your new account, the best thing to do is install a VPN.A VPN, or Virtual Private Network, hides the ability for programs to determine your location based on your IP address. When using a VPN, you will be provided with a new IP address, and you can even choose its location. Additionally, it encrypts your data, preventing Facebook from accessing other apps' data running in the background or currently in use.Don't Miss: The 4 Best VPN Apps for Android & iPhone For Android users, you can take advantage of VyprVPN's "Connection Per app" feature. This feature allows you to control which app should use the VPN and which app shouldn't. You can configure it to always keep the VPN on when using Facebook, but disable it for other apps to speed up the connection.
Step 5: Delete & Disable Location History DataFacebook has a feature known as "Location History" which is a set of location logs it makes as you travel with the app. However, since your location can be used to identify who you are, for the purpose of anonymity, you should turn this off. Check out our guide on how this can be accomplished:Don't Miss: How to Delete & Disable Facebook's Location History Data

Step 6: Create a New Facebook AccountOnce you have taken the above steps into account, whether on iOS or Android, it's now time to create that new Facebook profile. Head over to Facebook.com, or open Metal on your secondary user space to get started.Tap "Create New Account," then enter a name, ideally something fake. Next, enter your burner number, or type in your burner email by tapping "Sign up with email" under Next. When finished, tap "Next." Next, enter a password, then tap "Sign Up." If prompted, you can choose whether or not to log in to Facebook with one tap, versus logging in with your name and password. Once you decide, Facebook will either send you an SMS code if you provided a phone number, or a verification email if you entered an email. Type the code here then tap "Confirm," or verify your account via Facebook's email. Welcome to your new, anonymous privacy-centered Facebook account. Now you can view groups, events and more without having to use your personal information. Once you configure these settings ...
Step 7: Change Your Facebook Privacy SettingsJust because you took the precautions in the steps above, that doesn't protect you from some privacy infringements on Facebook's part. Your account's privacy settings by default aren't perfect, and will only hurt your standing the longer you use your account. To nip these problems in the bud, before you do anything with your profile, configure these settings. While Facebook still has plenty of ways to abuse your privacy after the fact, changing these settings gives you some armor against them. In today's world, you just have to take what you can get.Don't Miss: All the Facebook Privacy Settings You Need to Check

Step 8: Block Hidden Permissions (Android — Root Required)While Android does allow users the ability to manage permissions accessible by apps, there are far more that apps such as Facebook can access to learn more about, and you can't do anything about these by default. For example, even with the location permission turn off, Facebook can still determine your approximate location using your network, something location permission doesn't cover. This is why you need App Ops.Play Store Link: App Ops (free) Originally a hidden feature in Android 4.3 Jelly Bean, App Ops let you adjust a large amount of permissions for individual apps, including those that Android doesn't have controls for by default. This app will also inform you when a permission will last granted. For most permissions, you either allow the app access, deny it, or only allow while in use, saving you battery and protecting your identity. For Facebook, we want to deny everything. The easiest way to use App Ops is to have a rooted device. However, it is possible to use without root but requires ADB commands. Once installed, open App Ops and select "Facebook." Then go line by line, selecting each entry and denying it access, hindering the app's ability to learn who you are. This article was produced during Gadget Hacks' special coverage on smartphone privacy and security. How To: Change the Chat Color in Messenger Threads to Personalize a Conversation

How To: Change the Chat Color in Messenger Threads to Personalize a Conversation

Blue has defined Facebook's color scheme since its inception. Both Facebook's main app and Messenger theme are blue, which means your chat bubbles, like emoji, and menu bar items are also. While certainly a satisfying color for chat, you may get sick of it after a while, especially when it's in every thread. Luckily, Facebook lets you customize the color of individual Messenger chats.Messenger introduced color customization in December 2015. While the feature is relatively old, it has grown and evolved, offering both new color choices and fun gradient color options. The only thing is, anyone in the conversation can change the color theme for the chat, so if you change it to orange, the other person can change it to a blue/red gradient, and you can battle back and forth between themes.Don't Miss: Unsend Messages So Your Recipients Can't View Them Changing the colors in a chat thread is simple. First, open the thread you'd like to re-colorize. Next, tap on your friend's name or the group name at the top. On Android, you can also tap the info (i) button in the top right to get to the same place. Either way, on the next screen, tap "Color." You'll see an array of options, a total of 16 at this time. The first five options are color gradients, which will change colors as you scroll through a thread. The other 11 are solid colors. Tap an option to set that color for the chat immediately.Everybody in the chat will get a notification that you changed the color, whether they're on an iPhone or Android phone, so if there are any hotheads in your group, be careful. You may have a vivid brawl upcoming. Once you choose the color, Messenger will close the color picker, but you can quickly tap "Color" again if you change your mind. When finished, head back to your chat. You'll see the entire theme has changed to your new color scheme. Also present is an alert in the conversation that says either:"You set the color to [its color icon] Edit" (on iOS) "You changed the chat colors. [Its color icon]. Change" (on Android) It appears every time you change the color. And if someone else changed the tone, "You" will be replaced by their name. If you want to improve your color quickly, tap "Edit" or "Change" and Messenger will bring back the color menu right in your thread. Just remember that each time you change the colors, your friends receive a notification. On the flip side, your friends can change the colors at any time, so it's a free-for-all.Don't Miss: Sick of Thumbs Up? Binance 101: Sell Your Stellar, Ripple & Other Alt-Coins for Bitcoin or Ethereum

Binance 101: Sell Your Stellar, Ripple & Other Alt-Coins for Bitcoin or Ethereum
Selling alt-coins like Stellar (XLM) or Ripple (XRP) in exchange for more widespread coins like Ethereum (ETH) or Bitcoin (BTC) can be a daunting task if you're new to cryptocurrency. Though you'll still need to do your research to avoid potential disasters, Binance takes the hassle out of trading digital currencies on your smartphone. Now that it's easier to trade on the blockchain, more users are getting drawn into the world of virtual currencies. While there's vast potential to make your money grow, it can't be stressed enough how important it is to do your due diligence and keep track of the latest news for coins you're interested in. That said, we'll cover the process of trading your alt-coins for ETH or BTC below.Don't Miss: How to Deposit & Withdraw Cryptocurrencies in Binance
Step 1: Learn the Fees & Fine PrintBefore you even start trading in cryptocurrencies, we highly recommend you read up on all the fees and fine print you may need to deal with in Binance. There are plenty of minor details that you should be aware of, such as overall security, potential taxes that you may be subject to, and fees they charge for using their services. As far as fees go, Binance charges 0.1% for executing trades on their exchange, regardless of whether you're buying or selling. This flat fee is applied automatically once a buy or sell order is fulfilled, and it's deducted from the end cryptocurrency. We have a more thorough writeup regarding the fees and other details associated with Binance, so head to the link below to get up to speed.Don't Miss: Fees & Fine Print You Need to Know Before Trading on Binance
Step 2: Transfer Your Alt-Coin into BinanceOnce you've familiarized yourself with Binance and have decided to use the exchange for trading cryptocurrencies, you'll need to make sure you have currency in the exchange in order to sell your alt-coins for BTC or ETH.This involves withdrawing funds from your alt-coin's wallet, such as Tron's native wallet or any of the wallets available for Stellar, then depositing them into their corresponding wallets in the Binance app. It's fairly straightforward, but if you've never transferred funds into Binance before, head to our full guide on the topic to learn all about it. Note that the guide shows how to transfer from a Coinbase wallet into Binance, but the process is the same if you're using another wallet.Don't Miss: How to Move Cryptocurrency from Coinbase to Binance
Step 3: Learn the Difference Between Limit Orders & Market OrdersNow that your wallet is funded and you know about the fees involved with Binance, you're ready to start making trades. Though Binance allows for more in-depth trading on their site, the smartphone app limits you to trades of two types: limit orders and market orders.Basically, limit orders let you get in or out at a specific price point, while market orders let you instantly buy or sell alt-coins at their current market rate. Both methods come with their advantages and disadvantages. For instance, trading via limit orders lets you buy and sell at prices you deem reasonable, but your orders can take some time to fulfill. Taking the market order route, on the other hand, let's you buy and sell instantly, though the prices can be much higher when buying in, or lower when selling off.Ultimately, it's up to you to decide which method is most ideal as your trade alt-coins in Binance. That said, both methods are pretty simple to execute.

Step 4: Pick a Base CurrencyFirst, you'll need to pick a base currency — this is the mainstream coin you'll be selling your alt-coins for (BTC or ETH). So open the Binance app for Android or iPhone and tap on "Markets" in the bottom-left corner of your screen. From there, choose either BTC or ETH from the ticker along the top of your screen right below "Markets." We'll use ETH as an example, though the following steps are performed exactly the same way regardless of which base currency and alt-coin you wish to trade.

Step 5: Pick an Alt-Coin to SellNow, you'll need to choose the alt-coin you'd like to sell — we'll use TRX in this case. From the list that appears, either scroll down and tap on your desired alt-coin's ticker, or search for its ticker with the magnifying glass icon at the top of the screen. Whichever method you use, tapping on the ticker will open that coin's market page. Due to the sheer number of alt-coins in Binance, we recommend adding your picks as favorites to better keep track of their positions. It's pretty easy to do — just go to your target coin's market page and tap the star in the upper-right corner. Head to the link below if you'd like to learn more about this convenient feature.Don't Miss: How to Create Trading Pairs on Binance for Instant Access

Step 6: Sell Alt-CoinsIf you're using the limit order method, tap "Order Book" within the market page for your alt-coin, then press the red "Sell" button. Input the the target price you want to offload your alt-coin for, along with the total quantity in the boxes on the upper-left side of the screen. In addition to tapping on the "-" and "+" buttons on either side of the boxes, you can also manually input the exact amounts by tapping on the boxes themselves and using your numeric keypad to enter both price and quantity. If you want to sell off an exact percentage of your holdings, you can tap on the percentage buttons right below the quantity box.Once you've decided that everything's in order, tap on the red "Sell" button to execute the transaction. Binance will now place your buy order on its order books, and your alt-coin will be automatically sold either entirely or bit by bit until your order is fulfilled. To keep track of your open sell order, tap on "Open Orders" from within the transaction page for your alt-coin. From within the "Open Orders" page, you have the additional option of terminating any open orders you have, regardless of whether they're for buying or selling. To do so, simply tap on either the "Cancel" button within the order summary, or "Cancel All" button in the upper right corner of the pageSelling your alt-coins with the market order method is similar to the limit order method outlined above, but even easier. Start by tapping "Market Trades" within the market page for your alt-coin, then press the green "Sell" button. From there, enter your desired quantity, then simply tap the red "Sell" button to execute the transaction, and Binance will instantly convert your alt-coin to BTC or ETH, depending on which currency you chose in Step 4. How To: This Galaxy S9 Camera Feature Makes It Easy to Take Pictures When Your Hands Are Full
Taking one-handed pictures with your phone can quickly devolve into a juggling act. You have to secure the phone in landscape mode (if you're doing it right), tap to focus, and then somehow hit the shutter button without shaking the device too much. Fortunately, Samsung has a nifty feature that'll help you keep a more secure grip on your Galaxy S9 or S9+ as you take photos with one hand. The Galaxy S9 has an extra capture button that you can enable and place anywhere on the screen to make snapping photos a lot more convenient. The option is buried deep within the camera's settings, but it's very simple to set up once you find it. With this feature on, you can take photos with minimal finger movement and minimize the risk of dropping your phone in the process.Don't Miss: Enable Full-Screen Camera Shots on Your Galaxy S9

Enabling the Floating Shutter ButtonTo enable the floating shutter button on your S9's camera, open the Camera app and tap on cog-shaped settings button. Once inside the settings page, scroll down to the bottom half of the screen and tap on "Floating Camera Button" near the bottom of the screen. Exit settings once it's toggled on, and you'll now have an extra button that you can freely move around to better suit your needs. For those moments where the floating button becomes too intrusive no matter where you put it, you can instantly remove it by doing a long-press on the button. A tiny button with a minus sign will appear next to the floating button, so tap on it to delete the extra button.Don't Miss: The Best Camera Settings to Use on Your Galaxy S9Follow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Flipboard Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Flipboard

How To: This Android App Lets You Cast Unsupported Web Videos to Chromecast

How To: This Android App Lets You Cast Unsupported Web Videos to Chromecast
The Google Chrome browser for Android allows you to cast quite a few different videos from the web to your TV, but some sites actively disable this functionality, and others have outdated video players that won't allow for it. For example, Instagram's mobile website won't let you cast any videos, and the official app doesn't support Google Cast.To help with these problems, developer Martin Kainzbauer created a new mobile web browser designed specifically for casting content to your Chromecast, and it works for Amazon Fire TV and Android TV as well. As a result, we can now play almost any video from the mobile web right on the big screen, and all you need is an Android device to make it happen.

Step 1: Install Cast ControllerTo get this one going, start by installing Cast Controller, the browser built for Chromecast, Fire TV and Android TV.Install Cast Controller for free from the Google Play Store

Step 2: Cast Almost Any Web VideoWhen you first launch Cast Controller, you'll get a feature tour. After dismissing that, you'll be ready to try it out—and as a rule of thumb, any video that will play in a mobile browser can be sent to your TV, so keep that in mind.So start by navigating to any website with the address bar at the top of the screen. From here, tap the cast icon in the top-right corner, then select your Google Cast device or Fire TV. Once you're connected, the developer recommends that you play any videos on the page so that the browser will recognize them, and when you do that, the button in the bottom right corner will turn orange. After that, just tap the floating action button in the bottom-right corner of the screen, then the video will start playing on your TV. You can use the controls at the bottom of the app to play, pause, and skip, so it's a regular casting experience, but it works with almost everything. There are similar browser apps for iOS devices, but they're clunky, don't support Chromecast, Android TV, and Amazon Fire TV together, and still won't play all video types. So, if you want to cast videos from your browser, Android is definitely the winner here, which is no big surprise.Follow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, and YouTube Follow Android Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Google+
