How To: Save Your iPhone's Last Used Camera Settings So They're Ready Next Time You Take a Photo or Video
Even though your iPhone's Camera app is fast and easy to use, its default settings prevent you from immediately accessing any other shooting mode aside from "Photo" with "Live Photo" on and no filter applied. But there is a way to make the Camera app remember what you prefer the next time you open it up.As someone who rarely uses Live Photos and enjoys shooting square-shaped images that are perfect for Instagram, I like the convenience of not having to scroll away from Photo mode every single time Camera is launched. Those extra seconds can make or break the opportunity to capture a moment how I want.If you want your Camera app to remember your last settings, keep reading.Don't Miss: How to Transfer Media from Your DSLR Camera to Your iPhone

Step 1: Find 'Preserve Settings'Open up the "Settings" app, then scroll down and tap on "Camera" to view its preferences. Next, tap on "Preserve Settings" at the top of the screen.

Step 2: Choose Which Settings to PreserveThree options are featured in the Preserve Settings menu: Camera Mode; Creative Controls or Filter & Lighting or just Filter; and Live Photo. Toggling any of these on will ensure that the stock Camera app will not resort to its respective defaults upon launch, instead, remembering your last used preferences.Don't Miss: How to Unlock Your iPhone's Secret Camera Level An iPhone X's options (left) vs. an iPhone XS Max's options (right).

Option 1: All Preserve Settings 'Off'Before we explain each toggle's options, it's good to point out what settings are preserved while all of these toggles remain off.First, there's the Retina Flash (for selfies) or True Tone flash (for the rear camera). If you turn either flash "Off" or to "Auto," your choice will be remembered the next time you open Camera, but the Retina Flash will end up as the True Tone flash since the selfie camera is not preserved. However, if you last used "On" for either, the app will switch it to "Auto" the next time for the rear camera only.Second, there's HDR. No matter if you switch it to "Off" or "Auto," the app will remember your last used option when you go to take a picture later. However, if you last used "On," it will switch to "Auto" next time. Note that if you have "Smart HDR" or "Auto HDR" enabled, there will be no setting in the Camera app for HDR. Also, on newer iPhone models, you can only toggle HDR "On" and "Off" — there is no "Auto" option.Preserved: HDR preference (but "On" changes to "Auto"), flash preference (but "On" changes to "Auto") Not preserved: shooting mode preference, camera preference, filter preference, portrait lighting preference, depth preference, timer preference, panorama direction, zoom level, exposure and focus lock, Live Photo preference

Option 2: Camera ModeThe first option refers primarily to the type of capture: Time-lapse, Slo-mo, Video, Photo, Portrait, Square, and Pano (Panorama). So with the "Camera Mode" setting toggled on, the Camera app will always open with the last shooting mode you used. Apple's default choice is Photo using the rear wide-angle lens. Also, it will remember what camera you used last, whether the front FaceTime HD or TrueDepth camera for selfies or the rear camera setup for everything else. So, what doesn't get preserved with this setting enabled? For one, the timer will always be set to "Off" instead of its "3s" or "10s" options. Also, the direction in which you like to take Pano images will also be reset to left-to-right, its default position. Lastly, your optical or digital zoom will always reset to "1x" magnification, and the AE/AF Lock will no be set.Preserved: shooting mode preference, camera preference, HDR preference (see Option 1 above), flash preference (see Option 1 above) Not preserved: filter preference, portrait lighting preference, depth preference, timer preference, panorama direction, zoom level, exposure and focus lock, Live Photo preference

Option 3: Filter & Lighting or Creative ControlsThe second option is different depending on what model iPhone you have. It could either be called "Creative Controls" (for an iPhone XS, XS Max, or XR), "Filter & Lighting" (for an iPhone 8 Plus or X), or just "Filter" (for all other iPhone models).Filter refers to the built-in color effects which can be applied to your still images. When a filter is activated, the corner icon with three overlapping circles is illuminated in red, green, and blue. The default is Original (no effect), but if you last used Vivid, Vivid Warm, Vivid Cool, Dramatic, Dramatic Warm, Dramatic Cool, Mono, Silvertone, or Noir, the app will remember so.If you have an iPhone that supports Portrait lighting modes — Natural Light, Studio Light, Contour Light, Stage Light, and Stage Light Mono — then this will preserve those options too. For those of you with a new iPhone XS or higher model, the Depth ƒ/stop number you used will also be retained.Preserved: filter preference, portrait lighting preference, depth preference, HDR preference (see Option 1 above), flash preference (see Option 1 above) Not preserved: shooting mode preference, camera preference, timer preference, panorama direction, zoom level, exposure and focus lock, Live Photo preference

Option 4: Live PhotoThe last option refers to Apple's unique feature which allows the moments occurring just before and after an image to be captured as a GIF-like video. The key frame for a regular still image can be whatever you want from the Live Photo's timeline. When this feature is activated, its icon (three nested circles) in the top/side center is illuminated yellow. Note that Live Photo can only be used in the standard Photo shooting mode. The default is to have Live Photo toggled on, but it will remember to keep it off if that was your last choice.Preserved: Live Photo preference, HDR preference (see Option 1 above), flash preference (see Option 1 above) Not preserved: shooting mode preference, camera preference, filter preference, portrait lighting preference, depth preference, timer preference, panorama direction, zoom level, exposure and focus lock
Last, Not FavoriteSince this feature preserves the last mode and not a "favorite," you can always scroll back to your favorite mode after using another feature inside the Camera app. For example, even though I usually take Square photos, sometimes I shoot videos. Hence, after shooting a video with "Camera Mode" enabled — but before closing the app — I scroll from Video to Square so that Square mode is ready for me when I next launch Camera.Any shortcuts through 3D Touch or Control Center will take you to that specific mode in Camera still. For example, if you last left Camera on Square but use the 3D Touch shortcut to Record Video, the Camera app will launch directly to Video the next time — unless you switch back to Square before exiting the app.
Margin of ErrorInterestingly, the Camera app does account for accidental closure or brief app switching. So, even if all of the three Preserve Settings options are toggled off, your last-used options are preserved should the Camera app be relaunched within a minute; This applies to almost all of the settings available in Camera. Even the timer and zoom function will be retained temporarily, though, for zoom, it won't be remembered at all in either Photo or Square mode.Temporarily preserved: shooting mode preference, camera preference, flash preference, filter preference, portrait lighting preference, depth preference, time preference, zoom level (for most shooting modes), Live Photo preference, HDR preference Never preserved: zoom for Photo and Square mode, exposure and focus lock, panorama direction Of course, if you prefer Apple's defaults options, any or all of these options can remain toggled off and you'll be able to jump into whatever it was you were shooting with your last-used settings as long as it's under a minute or so since you last used Camera. (Remember, certain flash and HDR settings are preserved no matter what.)Don't Miss: How to Activate Your iPhone's Hidden Magnifying Glass for Extreme ZoomingFollow Gadget Hacks on Pinterest, Reddit, Twitter, YouTube, and Flipboard Sign up for Gadget Hacks' daily newsletter or weekly Android and iOS updates Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Flipboard

How To: Extract & Back Up All of Your Text Messages on Android

How To: Extract & Back Up All of Your Text Messages on Android
It always helps to be prepared for the worst. This applies to our phones now more than ever, as we depend on them to be our record keepers for text messages from friends, family, and coworkers. If you ever lose or severely damage your phone, having a backup of your precious texts gives you the peace of mind of knowing that you can always get them back.Thankfully, there's a tried and true app for doing exactly this on any Android device. SMS Backup & Restore can handle all your SMS backup needs, and it's totally free to install. It's also pretty easy to use, and it lets you upload your files directly to Google Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox, or your PC for instant access. Best of all, the app lets you schedule automatic backups for hassle-free saving of vital data.

Step 1: Download SMS Backup & RestoreBefore getting started, you'll first need to either head over to the Google Play Store and install SMS Backup & Restore by developer SyncTech, or simply tap on the link right below.Install SMS Backup & Restore for free from the Google Play Store

Step 2: Open SMS Backup & RestoreNext, open SMS Backup & Restore on your Android, then tap on "Get Started" to proceed. The app will need permission to access data like your contacts and messages for backup purposes, so tap "Allow" on the prompts that appear. Tap on "Set Up a Backup" after granting the app all the necessary permissions.

Step 3: Create a Backup FileIn addition saving text messages, SMS Backup & Restore also gives you the option of backing up call logs for posterity, which is enabled alongside "Messages" by default. You can disable this feature if you'd like — just tap on the toggle next to "Phone calls."Selecting "Advanced Options" gives you more settings to tweak, such as whether or not to include media files and emojis in your backups. We recommend that you disable the "Emojis & special characters" toggle, however, since it might interfere with backup retrieval outside the app. If you want to back up only specific conversations, tap on "Selected conversations only" then hit "0 conversations selected" to go to the selection page. From there, simply tap on the conversations you wish to preserve, then go back to the setup page after making your selections by hitting your back button. Tap on "Next" on the lower-right corner once you've set everything up to your liking.

Step 4: Select a Backup DestinationNow, the app will ask you where you'd like to store copies of your backups, so either tap one or all of the toggles next to "Google Drive," "Dropbox," or "OneDrive," depending on your preference. You can also choose your own device as a backup destination, though it's not recommended since data recovery may become impossible if your device is ever damaged or lost.If you still wish to save your backups to your phone, however, skip down to Step 6 to learn more. That said, once you've enabled any of the cloud-based accounts to send your files to, you'll be prompted to log in on a separate page, so hit the "Log In" button to proceed. If you're device is synced with any or all of the accounts listed in the app, a prompt will automatically appear showing the available accounts that are logged in, so choose the desired account from the list provided. If you want to log into another account not synced with your Android device, tap on "Add account" and enter your login credentials when prompted. Once you're logged in, you have the option of choosing which folder within your cloud account you want to send your backup files to (under the "Folder" section), along with with the ability to automatically delete older backups that pass a certain number of days. Any previous backups performed are available for you to view by simply hitting "Show History."

Step 5: Save Backup FileWith everything set up to your liking, it's time to perform a backup. So tap on "Save" in the lower-right corner of the page, then tap on the toggles directly under "Only Upload" if you want to perform the task while "Over Wi-Fi" or "While Charging." Hit "Next" in the lower-right corner of the screen to proceed. You'll now be taken to a setup page where you can opt to automatically schedule your backups by tapping on the toggle next to "Schedule recurring backups." From there, you can choose between "Daily," "Weekly," and "Hourly" backups, and you can choose the time and day you wish for the process to kick in.If you wish to bypass Doze Mode to ensure that backups are performed even when your phone is in deep sleep, enable the toggle next to "Run scheduled backups at exact time." If you don't want to receive notifications each time a backup is performed, make sure the toggle next to "Disable notifications" is turned on.Instead of waiting on a scheduled backup, you should make a manual backup this first time. So hit "Back Up Now," but keep in mind that you won't need to do this again in the future (backups will happen automatically if you've followed this guide). Once your first backup has completed, you can view its details

Step 6: Save a Backup on Your Device (Optional)If you want back up your text history to your device instead of the cloud, tap on "Your phone" on the setup page, then set the destination folder to either the app's folder (SMSBackupRestore on your SD card or internal storage) or "Your own folder" (any folder of your choosing). It's important to keep track of the destination folder, as you'll need it later on to retrieve your files from an external source. Hit "Next" on the lower-right corner when you've selected a folder, then tap "Yes" on the warning prompt to commence. You'll now be taken to a page to schedule automatic backups and enable other options. For more on this, refer to the bottom half of Step 5.

Step 7: View Backup Messages on Your PCWith your SMS texts and phone calls successfully backed up, you'll now be able to view them at any time simply by logging in to the cloud-based account you had the files sent to and clicking on the XML file that starts with "SMS" followed by the date the backup was performed (example: sms-20180626123456.xml). If you opted to store your backups on your device, you'll need to plug your phone to your PC using a USB cable. After doing so, allow your PC to access your device by either granting it permission from the prompt that appears, or set it to "Transfer Files" by tapping on the USB options tab from within your notifications panel. From there, go to your PC and and click on "Open device to view files" from the window that appears to access your Android's files, then navigate to the folder where you sent your backup files. Click on the backup file once you've found it, and it'll open up on a new browser window for you to view in full.

Step 8: Restore Backups on a New Android DeviceNow that your SMS messages and call logs are safely backed up, you're ready for the worst case scenario. If something happens to your current phone or if you just buy a new phone, you can easily restore your messages and call logs.To do so, repeat steps 1 and 2 on the new device, then head to the side navigation menu in SMS Backup & Restore and select "Restore." From there, choose your cloud storage account, log in, then select the backup file you viewed in Step 7. How To: Get Rid of the Annoying "High Volume" Alert When Using Headphones on Your Samsung Galaxy S4
When you were younger, you probably had your parents bugging you not to have your cassette player headphones up too loud. For all you younger readers out there, it was probably a CD player. The even younger readers likely had an iPod or other MP3 player. Either way, your parents didn't want you to mess up your hearing, blasting that Limp Bizkit in your ears (wow, I'm showing my age here).Anyways, I'm a grown-ass man now, and I'm gonna listen to my music however loudly I want. You've gotta enjoy the little freedoms in life. But now, we have Samsung playing mommy and daddy. Every time you try to raise the volume on your Galaxy S4 with headphones plugged in, you get a pop-up alert warning you that high volume may damage your hearing. If that bugs you as much as it does me, follow my softModder tutorial and get rid of that annoying warning once and for all. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.
Prerequisite: Xposed FrameworkYou'll need to have a rooted GS4 with XDA developer rovo89's very popular Xposed Framework. Don't have it yet? Check out my full guide to installing it on a rooted GS4. Once you have it on your phone, you can easily install all kinds of mods and customizations, so you'll likely want to get it setup either way.
Step 1: Back Up Your DataThe most important step to take is backing up your GS4's data. Though I rarely run into any problems with the Xposed framework, there's no such thing as being too cautious. If you have a custom recovery like ClockworkMod or TWRP, you should make a full nandroid backup. If not, use an app like Titanium Backup or Helium to back up your apps and system data.

Step 2: Enable the 'Unknown Sources' SettingBy default, Android phones are only able to install apps from the Google Play Store. In order to allow installation of apps from outside of the Play Store, we need to tell our phone it's okay to do so. Head to your GS4's Settings -> More -> Security, scroll down to the Device administration section, and check the box next to Unknown sources.

Step 3: Download the 'Wanam Xposed' ModuleCreated by developer Wanam, this all-in-one module has dozens of features to help you customize your GS4. From Xposed's main menu, tap on Download to get to the official repository of modules. You can use the search bar or just scroll down the alphabetical list, and look for Wanam Xposed. Once you locate it, tap the Download button.

Step 4: Install the ModuleAs soon as the download finishes, the installer will pop up. Tap Install at the bottom right corner, then Done when it finishes.

Step 5: Activate the ModuleYou'll get a notification reminding you that the module isn't activated yet. Tap on it to head to Xposed's Modules page. Locate Wanam Xposed and check the box next to it. Now reboot your phone for the module to go into effect.

Step 6: Enable The "Disable Loud Volume Warning" SettingOnce your phone boots up, you can open up Wanam Xposed from your app drawer. A Superuser request will pop up, so grant it access. Tap on Sound, and the very first setting is Disable loud volume warning. Check the box next to it. With most Xposed modules, you'll need to reboot for changes to take effect. You'll get a notification reminding you to do so, and you can do a fast reboot from there.
Step 7: Listen to Music as Loud as You Want......without Samsung stopping you. Once your phone boots up, you can test out your new mod. Plug some headphones in and pump up the volume! You'll notice that the pesky warning is a thing of the past.If you need any help, let us know in the comments.

How To: Transfer Your Authy Account to a New Phone

How To: Transfer Your Authy Account to a New Phone
One of the main reasons Authy was able to top our list of the best two-factor authentications apps was its ability to transfer access to a new device. This feature ensures that whenever you get a new phone, you don't lose all your tokens. However, if the process is done incorrectly, you can leave your account vulnerable. With Authy, you don't have to worry about losing access to important online accounts just because your phone gets lost, broken, or stolen. You can either transfer the access from one phone to another or keep your account accessible on two devices, so it is even easier to access your tokens. Both options have similar procedures, only differing by one step, which I'll outline belowDon't Miss: The 5 Best Two-Factor Authentication Apps for iPhone & Android

Step 1: Download Authy on the New PhoneObviously, you need Authy on the new phone to get started. Head over to the Play Store or App Store and download Authy.Install Authy: Android (free) | iOS (free)

Step 2: Enable Multi-DeviceTo transfer access, you need to enable Multi-Device, a feature which is disabled by default. On your old phone, open Authy and select "Settings" (on iOS) or the three vertical dots then "Settings" (on Android). The next page looks different depending on which operating system your device uses. For iOS, select the "Devices" tab located at the bottom of your screen. For Android, you'll find the same tab near the top of the screen. Once under the tab, select "Allow Multi-device" to enable the toggle.

Step 3: Transfer AccessOn your new phone, when you open Authy, a page will appear asking for your phone number. Authy uses your phone number as a way to store your account, making it easier to retrieve. Once inputted, a new prompt will appear asking you to verify your account in one of three ways: using your old device, by phone, or by SMS. Since using an existing phone is both the easiest and safest method, we will start with that one. Select "Use existing device" to reveal a new prompt asking you to wait for approval. On your old phone, a notification will appear asking you to approve the new device. Select "Accept," which prompts a new popup asking you to input "Yes" (on iOS) or "OK" (on Android). Input the text and select "OK," and after a few seconds, your new device will have access to your account. If you don't have the old phone (because it's broken or stolen), you can still use "SMS" or "Phone call" to input the code. Choosing "SMS" will have the system send you a text message with your code, which you input in the prompted area. For "Phone call," Authy will call your phone number and read off the code you need to enter. Once the code is correctly entered, you can see all your accounts.

Step 4: Unlock Your DatabaseYou may have noticed that all your accounts have a small red padlock next to their name. This icon indicates that these accounts are encrypted and require a passcode to be entered before you can access them. Select an account to bring up the "Decrypt Accounts" page. Input your password (the one you created when you first signed up for Authy) and select the button.Once done correctly, you will no longer see the red padlock and you'll be able to see each token for your accounts.

Step 5: Protect Your AccountNow that you have successfully transferred your accounts, let us re-establish protection. First, whether you are getting rid of your old phone or plan to keep it, you'll want to make sure someone else can't access your account using just your password.Since spoofing phone numbers is possible, you need to prevent a potential hacker from also adding their device to the list of connected devices. Therefore, you should turn off "Allow multi-device" (which you enabled in Step 2). By disabling this feature, a hacker won't be able to transfer access to their device.Second, if you plan to sell your old phone, or it was lost or stolen, you should remove its access so that someone using those devices can't access your tokens. Enter "Settings," and under "Devices," select a device under the grouping Other Connected Devices. Tap the "Remove Device" button and select "Yes" on the popup. Now that access it removed, a few things happen. Any Authy-powered tokens (ones which use Authy's push notifications to send tokens) will no longer work on the new device. Backup and sync will also stop working, preventing any permanent changes to your tokens. The removed device will also not be able to add new tokens or authorize new devices. You should be aware that it won't block access to tokens not powered by Authy (which will probably be most accounts), so we strongly recommend using a password manager on those accounts to strengthen your other layer of defense.Don't Miss: How To Set Up Two-Factor Authentication for Your Accounts Using Authy & Other 2FA AppsFollow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Flipboard Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Flipboard

The horizontal dotted icon in your iPhone's status bar serves as an indicator of your device's network strength. How To: Play DuelBeats on Your iPhone or Android Before Anyone Else

Fans of rhythm tap games and traditional one-on-one fighters finally have something to bring them closer together. DuelBeats, a fighting game that lets you perform moves by tapping to the beat of a song, has been released as a soft launch for both iOS and Android in New Zealand, Australia, and Singapore. Just because the game is exclusive to those regions doesn't mean we can't try it out for ourselves, and with a little hackery, it's entirely possible to do so.DuelBeats is like a mix of Street Fighter and DDR, so you beat down your opponent by staying on top of a song's rhythm, using an assortment of taps and swipes to deal damage and dominate the stage. Perfectly timed taps can obliterate your enemy's defenses and earn you more coins to unlock and summon characters. Each new character you collect has a unique set of abilities and combos that you can use to conquer the stage. DuelBeats comes standard with both single player and online PvP matchups against other players. Music is a significant element in the game, as it's a necessity for gameplay as opposed to just serving as background filler. As of this release, there are about 18 original music tracks that can be unlocked through progression, which cover a wide spectrum high-intensity music ranging from EDM to rock-and-roll and hip-hop. As a soft launch for both Android and iOS, regular users can't currently play DuelBeats unless they live in Singapore, Australia, or New Zealand. Kiz, the studio behind the game, has scheduled its worldwide debut in the summer of 2017. But that's just a speed bump for a true gadget hacker, so if you'd like to try out DuelBeats now to see if its the right fit for you, read on to find out how.Don't Miss: Play ChronoBlade on Your iPhone or Android Before Its Official Release

Install DuelBeats on AndroidDuelBeats requires Android KitKat or higher, but aside from that, installing the game on Android is incredibly easy. Just make sure that "Unknown sources" is enabled in Settings, then tap the following link to download the APK installer file. From there, tap the Download complete notification and hit "Install" when prompted — you are now free to open and play DuelBeats!Download DuelBeats for Android (.apk)

Install DuelBeats on iOSDuelBeats will run on any iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch on iOS 10, so make sure to update your device to the latest firmware to play the game. As is the case with anything soft launched, the App Store's region restrictions will need to be bypassed in order to install the game. An Apple ID will need to be created using a realistic home address in a country where the game was launched — in this case, either Australia, New Zealand, or Singapore. Creating a location-spoofed Apple ID is straightforward: Just sign up with a valid email account, input a realistic home address for the country you're spoofing, then log into the spoofed account on your iPhone or iPad. If you want more detailed instructions on how to bypass App Store region restrictions, feel free to head to the following link below for a more thorough walkthrough.Don't Miss: Change Your App Store Country to Download Region-Locked Apps & Games on Your iPhoneOnce you've cleared that hurdle, you'll be able to download DuelBeats just like any other app or game. Simply search for the game on the App Store, or just head to the following link to grab it from the New Zealand App Store.Download DuelBeats for free from the iOS App Store (New Zealand) As a soft launch, DuelBeats is still technically in development and is still far from a finished game, so please take that into consideration when you download and play it, as there's a chance you may experience a few bugs. The game was tested on an iPad Pro running iOS 10.3, as well as a Lenovo Zuk Z2 Pro running Android Marshmallow, and we found that it worked very well with no glaring faults. How is the game running on your device?
