How To: The Ultimate Guide to Smoother Netflix Streams on Any Device, Anywhere
The older I get, the more my Friday nights involve watching Netflix at home with a bottle of Maker's Mark and a box of Oreos. Netflix is a big part of my life, and I'm not alone. YouTube and Netflix make up over 50% of all activity on the Internet, so it might be worth your time to understand why Netflix seems to cause so many headaches and what can be done about it.

Introduction: The Role of Your Internet Service ProviderBefore diving into any hacks and tricks, you should understand that your Internet Service Provider (ISP) plays a huge role in how you experience Netflix and there's not much you can do about it. I, for instance, have one of the absolute worst ISPs for streaming Netflix. For reasons I'd rather not discuss, that would be AT&T.As you can see from the monthly Netflix ISP Speed Index, various ISPs deliver different viewing speeds in megabits per second (bitrate). AT&T rates #13 for the month of April, and an embarrassing #54 (that's out of 60) when you include smaller ISPs in the rankings.
What Determines These Rankings? Most of it has to do with the connection speed you pay for, and your ISP's ability to deliver the speeds they promise. But, some of it also has to do with an ongoing feud between Netflix and a handful of popular providers, some of which are refusing to upgrade their peering connections to major backbone providers in a move to try and get an extra buck out of Netflix for a direct connection.

But ISPs Don't Hold All the BlameNetflix is essentially demanding free rack space, power, and bandwidth in order to host their servers (as part of Netflix's "Open Connect" program) inside the ISP data centers. While this is good for users (it puts the servers hosting your videos closer to your home), it's a really sly business move by Netflix that tricks their customers into blaming their ISP when it's Netflix that's trying to get a free ride. But a handful of ISPs aren't budging...Do you notice the "+2" next to Comcast's ranking? A few months ago Netflix struck a deal and paid Comcast to improve the quality of their streams. This last month Verizon did the same thing, and their streaming speed is expected to rise in the coming months. However, AT&T is still begging for money from Netflix and likely won't improve its speeds any time soon as Netflix continues to try to apply pressure. Just my luck. All of Netflix's growth comes at a cost. Although they have the cheapest bandwidth deal of pretty much any web service provider around, when your services account for a full third of internet usage at peak times, you're still going to have a hefty price. Netflix bandwidth usage during peak times. Image via CIS 471 To help offset this, and to continue expanding their library, Netflix has increased their price for new memberships by 1 dollar, and will increase it for current members in 2 years time. But enough with all the foreplay, let's get into how you can actually improve your streaming, no matter which ISP or device you have.
Getting the Most Out of Your Internet ConnectionRegardless of what device you use, you'll need to optimize your connection to the internet to get the clearest video stream possible. Before toying around with your laptop or Xbox, read through the following steps on how to discover your network's downloading speed and improve it.
Step 1: Check Out Netflix's Suggested SpeedsNetflix has recommended speeds for streaming its content:0.5 Mbps - Required broadband connection speed 1.5 Mbps - Recommended broadband connection speed 3 Mbps - Recommended for SD quality 5 Mbps - Recommended for HD quality 25 Mbps - Recommended for 4K quality So, depending on what you're watching, what you're watching it on, and whether you care about HD or not, those are your numbers to shoot for.

Step 2: Check Your Actual SpeedsThere are a few ways to test your speeds, one of which includes going straight to your ISP and running a speed test directly from their website:AT&T Speed Test XFINITY Speed Test Time Warner Cable Speed Test Verizon Speed Test A second option includes using a third party, which is a good idea if you question the legitimacy of the tests your ISP gives you. Speedtest.net is by far the most popular, and has an easy-to-understand interface that displays your download speed, upload speed, and PING. If you're using a mobile device, Speedtest.net offers mobile apps to measure speeds on Android, iOS, and Windows Phone. If you have an Android phone, you can even use something like Internet Speed Meter to see real-time speed stats in your status bar.

Step 3: Check Your Bitrate on NetflixNetflix hosts a rather strange test video called "Example Short 23.976" that you can use to monitor your bitrate and resolution. It's worth a watch. I mean, why would you not want to watch a man moonwalk around a fountain with a laptop? This reviews say it all: "Stunning and transfixing. This sensitive film draws the viewer into rethinking the entire human experience."Depending on what device you're using and what network you're on, there is a cap in bitrate. For instance, I can't go over 3 Mbps on a MacBook Pro or an iPhone 5, and 5.8 Mbps on a Chromecast, and 1.75 Mbps on a Samsung Galaxy S3 and Galaxy S5 using a TWC connection. This seems about right when compared to the average speeds for TWC in the Speed Index above.
Step 4: Check Out Your Max ResolutionAnother thing you may not know is that Netflix works differently on every device, and that includes resolution caps. Here are just a few examples of popular devices and their caps.Silverlight Player (in web browser) - 720p; HD with 5+ Mbps connection Windows 8 App - 1080p Chromecast - 1080p; HD with 5+ Mbps connection Apple TV 2 - 720p Apple TV 3 - 1080p Roku - Varies from 720p to 1080p iPad - 1080p (iOS 7); 480p (iOS 6 and below) Android tablets - 480p (except for the Nexus 7, which streams in HD) Xbox 360 - 720p; HD with 5+ Mbps connection Xbox One - 1080p; HD with 5+ Mbps connection PS3 + PS4 - 1080p; HD with 5+ Mbps connection For devices not listed, search their help section for "Netflix features on...".
Step 5: Check Your BandwidthEvery coffee shop and library has a bandwidth hog. You know the guy, the one set up in a corner with his Alienware gaming laptop, headset, and Call of Duty T-shirt. Public networks usually have a bandwidth cap. You should moniter your bandwidth on various public networks and see what you find out.Are you viewing at home from a game console or mobile device? Turn off your laptop. Are you viewing from a laptop? Turn off your Xbox Live or any device connected to the same network. If there is any downloading going on (especially torrenting), chances are it is using up the majority of your bandwidth. You can watch Netflix for one hour and accumulate 1 GB in data, and that's for SD streaming. HD will get you 3 GB. 4K is 7 GB.

Step 6: Optimize Your Home Network SetupSetting up your home network intelligently requires some planning. Some steps you can take to optimize your connection include positioning your router correctly, avoiding other wireless signals, changing your Wi-Fi channel (this can make a huge difference if you live in a network-dense area like an apartment building), and even making your own "cantennas" out of an empty soda can (yes, they totally work). Click here for more info on optimizing your home wireless network. Image via MakeUseOf If you haven't updated your router in a few years, it might be time to look into getting a new one. In our testing, the ASUS RT-AC68U Wireless-AC1900 was the fastest (and most reliable), but if $200 is too steep a price, the cheaper RT-AC66U or RT-N66U are great alternatives.
Step 7: Change Your DNS SettingsTry manually changing your DNS server. "Google Public DNS" and "OpenDNS" are two reliable servers you should can try using.8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 for Google DNS 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220 for OpenDNS To access and change your DNS settings, follow one of the manuals below for your respective device.iPad, iPhone, iPod touch Android PS3 + PS4 Xbox Nintendo Wii Windows + Mac systems Apple TV
How to Stream Faster on Your ComputerOnce you have accepted the limits of your ISP and ruled our your router as the culprit of a crappy Netflix stream, it's time to move on to your viewing device. This section focuses on watching Netflix on your computer.

Step 1: Basic TroubleshootingIt should go without saying that you need to reboot your computer and router. When my toaster doesn't work, I make sure it's plugged in. When my car won't start, I check the battery. Rebooting your computer is one of those simple things we forget, yet it solves a surprising number of issues. If rebooting does't solve the problem, eliminate the middle man. Plug into your router with an Ethernet cable. This absolutely rules out any issues with your connection. Remember to turn off your computer and router before you connect. Image via Netflix

Step 2: Update SilverlightMake sure you have the right version of Silverlight installed. Just head to the Microsoft Silverlight site, which will show you exactly what version you have installed. If you have an older version, it'll prompt you to install the newest one.

Step 3: Change Your Streaming QualityIf HD is just too taxing for your speeds, lower your playback quality. Go to "Your Account", click on "Playback Setting", and change it from "Auto" to whatever you think will make things smoother.

Step 4: Manually Select Your Buffering RateTo change buffering rates during a slow Netflix stream, press Control+Alt(Opt)+Shift+S to bring up the Stream Manager in your browser. If you're curious about the details behind your Netflix stream, you can show various data rates and A/V specs, press Control+Alt(Opt)+Shift+D to bring up the A/V Stats window.

Step 5: Use a Virtual Private Network (VPN)Virtual Private Networks are most commonly used by people who want their data encrypted and kept private. However, a VPN may be a great solution to your problems with Netflix. As a side effect of the VPN's anonymity, the VPN routes traffic away from clogged servers that would otherwise provide you with your video. Netflix's CDN stores its caches in a variety of locations, and there are several routes data can take to reach you. Image via TorGuard You can easily set up a VPN on Mac or Windows XP and register with a number of trusted VPNs like proXPN, WITopia, and UnoTelly.

How to Stream Faster on Your Mobile DeviceIt should go without saying, all other apps and programs on your device should be turned off and closed out of. Many times applications will be open without you even knowing. Think of these like tabs in a browser. You may not see them but they could be using data. Find Netflix and force-close it. Click here for instructions on force-closing apps in iOS 7, and here for Samsung Galaxy devices.
How to Stream Faster on Your Gaming ConsoleIf you weren't already aware, you can stream Netflix from your PS3, Xbox 360, Wii, and even in 3D from a Nintendo 3DS.Most Netflix issues on a game console can be solved exactly the same as they are on a computer, like by force closing the app (here's instructions for the Xbox One). However, there are a few fixes unique to gaming consoles that may improve your streaming.
Step 1: Disconnect Third-Party HeadsetsThird-party wireless headsets broadcast on the same 2.4 GHz frequency as older wireless routers. Try disconnecting the power from your headset and see if it improves your connection. If you have a cordless landline telephone, you might try unplugging that too (who wants to be interrupted by a phone call anyway?).
Step 2: If Using PlayStation, Check for System Clock IssuesIf you're streaming from your PS3 or PS4, system clock issues are a known cause of poor performance with Netflix. You may need to manually set the system's time and date. To do so...From the XMB home menu, go to Settings -> Date and Time Settings -> Date and Time Select "Set Manually" Enter the current date and time, and press the button to confirm Launch Netflix

Step 3: If Using Xbox, Check the Status of Xbox Live ServicesCheck the status of Xbox Live services and the Netflix application. Updated regularly, Xbox will announce which app services are "up and running" and which ones are limited or completely down. If there is an issue with Netflix, they will let you know.

Step 4: If Using Xbox, Delete Corrupted DataSometimes corrupted data can effect your streaming quality. Follow these steps to clean up your "Games and Apps" folder.Press the "Guide" button on your controller Select "Settings" Select "System Settings" Select "Storage" Select your storage device (your "Hard Drive" or "Memory Unit") Select the folder "Games and Apps" Look through each folder to check for corrupted data which will be displayed with a yellow exclamation point Select any corrupted data files you find and select "Delete" Image via Team Xecuter
Streaming Players, Blu-Rays, & Smart TVsVirtually every issue with these players can be resolved using a combination of the steps above. If you have a specific issue, please post in the comments below and we'll see what we can figure out! When dealing with Netflix issues it's either one thing or another. Try a few of my fixes out, and if none of them work, you can always try a handle of Maker's Mark and a box of Oreos.

There I recently read a post about spin-activated LED side caps that fit into the side of yo-yos. They are low-cost ($6) and look very cool; a perfect customizing add-on for any yo-yo. Unfortunately, they only come in one size, thus only fitting a few yo-yos. I thought it'd be a fun project to make my own set (and it was!).

Gmail 101: How to Send & Receive Money with Android's Default Email App

Gmail 101: How to Send & Receive Money with Android's Default Email App
Since its debut in 2004, Gmail has become the go-to email service for the internet at large. Over 1.2 billion people use it, so Google has wisely continued to add features that address the needs and wants of its diverse user base. For US and UK users, one of these new features is the ability to transfer money.Gmail lets you send or request money using Google Wallet. The desktop version has had this feature for a while, and the Android app recently added this functionality. With a few touches, you can send money to anyone along as they are located within the United States (if you are located in the US) or in the UK (if you located in the UK). There are no fees whatsoever, so there's no excuse not to try it!

Step 1: Set Up Google WalletIn order to send money, you need to have a Google Wallet account. Fortunately, Google automates this process whenever you add a debit or bank account to your account to purchase apps. Therefore, if you've already purchased an Android app or added a payment source to your Android account, you can skip this step.If you haven't added a card, download the Google Wallet app on your Android device. Once installed, select the hamburger menu in the upper-left-hand corner of your display and choose "Payment methods." Select "Add Payment Method" found along the bottom portion of your screen. By default, Google Wallet will present you the form to set up a debit card. However, if you wish to add a bank account instead, tap the "Add debit card" text to open a drop-down menu with the additional options for bank accounts.Although credit cards, prepaid cards, and PayPal accounts can be added to your Google account to purchase apps, these methods cannot be used to send or receive money. If you've already added that type of account, it will be listed as a payment method in Google Wallet, but won't be available for you to send money.Fill out the form and choose "save" at the bottom of the screen. When you've successfully entered your card, you'll be returned to the previous menu with your card listed as a payment option.

Step 2: Compose an EmailNext, open the Gmail app and use the pencil button in the bottom-right corner of the display to create a new email. If you wish to reply to an email, select the left-facing arrow next to the sender's name while within the email.

Step 3: Send MoneyNext, select the paper clip icon near the top-right corner of the screen and choose "Send Money." A popup menu will emerge asking you to enter the amount you wish to send. Input the amount and select "Attach Money." Another popup will display asking if you wish to add a note. Select "Done," and now within the body of the email will be a notification indicating the money is attached.

Step 4: Request Money (Optional)If you wish to request money, select the same paper clip icon as mentioned in Step 3, but choose "Request money." Input the amount you wish to receive and select "Attach Request." Gmail will ask if you'd like to add a memo to your request. Select "Done" when you are finished and your request will appear in the body of the email.

Step 5: Complete the TransactionOnce you either attach a payment (or request for one), complete the email and send it as you normally would. The recipient will receive an email similar to the screenshot below (depending on if you sent money or requested money). If you are sending to a non-Gmail email address, the recipient will get a link to Google Wallet to complete the same signup process depicted in Step 1. However, if you sent money to another Gmail user, they'll see a popup when they open the email with the option to "Transfer to bank" (if they're receiving money) or "Pay Now" (if they're sending money). If the recipient doesn't have a payment method linked to their Gmail account, they'll be asked to add either a debit card or a bank account to complete the transaction. If they already have a Google Wallet account with a compatible payment method, they can simply select their linked card or account to complete the transaction. When receiving money, the amount of time it takes for the money to be deposited into your bank account will depend on two factors: Which payment method you chose and your bank. If you are using a debit card, the payment can post in a matter of minutes, with some banks taking up to 24 hours to show the incoming payment. However, when using a bank account, financial institutions can take up to 72 hours before posting the transaction.
Gmail continues to evolve as a platform, allowing it to capture 21% of the market, which makes it the second most popular email client. How do you like Gmail's ability to transfer money? How To: The One Flaw You Need to Know About Safari's "Private" Mode in iOS 8

A warning to all of you iPhone users with parents, significant others, and nosy friends: Private Mode in the Safari browser isn't as private as you think. At least, not as private as it used to be back in iOS 7. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.
Don't Miss: The 5 Best Hidden Safari Features in iOS 8 for Your iPhoneThanks to a tip from Redditor ILikeToSpooner, we know that when you exit Private Mode in Safari on iOS 8, you're no longer asked if you want to close all tabs in the window like you were in iOS 7. This dialog box would ensure that you could easily close all of the tabs you were surfing in Private Mode, which more than likely you didn't want seen by others. However, in iOS 8, this prompt is absent. Instead, when you exit Private Mode, you're taken to your regular Safari tabs. When you go back into Private Mode, any tabs that were opened are still available for anyone to see. (1) Regular Safari tabs. (2) Still present Private Mode tab. This is a big change from previous behavior of Private Mode, most likely due to the fact that private and regular browsing modes shared the same window previously instead of getting their own, and switching over meant that all of your private tabs would be converted to non-private tabs, unless you closed them all.Still, if you're not cautious in iOS 8, it can cause some unnecessary grief. So, be careful—manually close out your Private Mode tabs—or maybe try a third-party browser with better privacy options. At least until Apple comes to their senses and adds passcode-protection for the Private window. If we ever get that, you could leave those tabs open all you want.

How To: Remove Live Tiles & Resize the Start Menu in Windows 10

How To: Remove Live Tiles & Resize the Start Menu in Windows 10
The Start menu is finally back in Windows 10, but a lot has changed since we last saw it in Windows 7. From a visual standpoint, the first difference you'll notice is the addition of live tiles, which occupy the right half of the Start menu and provide quick information from your "Universal" Windows apps. For some folks, the addition of live tiles isn't exactly a desirable feature, as they take up quite a bit of space and make your Start menu much bigger than it needs to be. So if you prefer a slim, clutter-free Start menu, you'll be happy to know that these live tiles can be removed, which will then allow you to shrink your Start menu down to a single column.

Step 1: Remove All Live TilesIf you're looking to shrink your Start menu down to a single column, start by removing all of the live tiles from the right-hand portion of the menu. To do that, simply right-click any live tile, then select "Unpin from Start." Repeat this process of unpinning live tiles from your Start menu until you are left with none. At this point, your Start menu should look a lot less cluttered, but it's still a bit too wide, so we'll fix that next.

Step 2: Shrink Your Start Menu Down to a Single ColumnWith all of your live tiles gone, simply hover your mouse pointer over the right edge of your Start menu. When your mouse pointer changes into a double-headed arrow, click and hold your left mouse button, then drag the edge of your Start menu over to the left. After dragging the edge of your Start menu as far over to the left as possible, you'll be left with a clean, single-columned Start menu. If you'd like, you can also shrink the Start menu vertically by dragging the top edge downward. Did you shrink your Start menu down to a single column more because you're a fan of simplicity, or was it because you just don't like the new live tiles? Let us know in the comment section below, or drop us a line on Facebook, Google+, or Twitter.

How To: Install Nova Launcher on Your Samsung Galaxy Gear for a More Standard Android Look

When it comes to the user interface, you're pretty much limited to the stock one that comes on your Samsung Galaxy Gear smartwatch—a carousel of large black and white icons representing the features and applications on the watch. In the world of Android devices, this doesn't seem right, considering you can pretty much customize the UI however you want on most devices. You could install something like Nova Launcher on your Samsung Galaxy Note 3 and get a whole new home screen.Well, you can actually get a new look on your Galaxy Gear, only it's not as simple as just installing a third-party launcher on an Android phone or tablet and setting it as the default. But it isn't really hard, either, and in today's softModder guide, I'm going to show you how to do it.
Step 1: Set Up ADB on Your ComputerFor this guide, we'll be using Nova Launcher, since I mentioned it earlier. Nova Launcher isn't available on the Galaxy Gear, so you'll need to use Android Debug Bridge (ADB) to sideload it onto the watch. For instructions, check out our softModder guide to installing and setting up the ADB utility on your computer for help.

Step 2: Install the Samsung DriverSince the Galaxy Gear is run by Samsung, you'll need to have the appropriate software installed on your computer. Download, unzip, and install this Samsung Driver onto your Windows PC. Image via wonderhowto.com

Step 3: Enable USB Debugging on Your GearIn order to connect the Gear to your computer, you'll need to enable USB Debugging on the device. To do so, go to Settings on your Gear, then Gear info and make sure USB debug is checked. Image via wonderhowto.com

Step 4: Test the ConnectionIn order to test if your Galaxy Gear is connected with ADB, first connect your Gear (via USB) to your computer. Next, open up a Command Prompt and type in the following, followed by the Enter key.adb reboot If your watch reboots and CMD looks like it does in the picture below, then you're fine. Image via wonderhowto.com If your Gear doesn't reboot, either your watch is not USB debugged, or ADB is not properly installed.

Step 5: Download the Nova Launcher APKLike I previously said, Nova Launcher isn't available in the Gear Store, so you'll need to download the Nova Launcher APK file onto your computer. You can find it on the internet (pro tip: type in "Nova Launcher apk" into Google)—if not, try this direct download link. Once it's downloaded, rename it to something easy, like nova.apk (this will come in handy in the next step).

Step 6: Use CMD to Install Nova LauncherNow, place the Nova Launcher file on your desktop to make the process easier. Right-click on it, tap on Properties, and copy the Location, which should be something like:C:\Users\username\Desktop Now, open a Command Prompt and type in the following command, with the copied location pasted and the Nova Launcher file name at the end, and hit the Enter key.adb install C:\Users\username\Desktop\nova.apk At first, it may not seem like anything happens, but that's just the application downloading onto the Gear. Once it's done, it should say Success.

Step 7: Use Nova LauncherFrom the application drawer on your Gear, you should now see a color icon for Nova Launcher. Tap on it and you'll be given the option to either have this as your stock launcher (Always) or for just this specific time (Just once). Now you'll see that your Gear has a whole new setup, with multiple small icons on each page. If you swipe to the side, you'll have several pages to fill up with any applications you've downloaded. Note: The Google search bar doesn't work, as the device doesn't come with internal internet capabilities. If you tap on the circle at the bottom of the screen, it will take you to where you can add applications and widgets to your home screen. Note: None of the widgets work, but if you download them you can potentially use them.If you tap on the three-dot menu, you can then go to Nova Settings to mess with things like the launcher size, icon size and color, icon placement, and more. Overall, a much better launcher than the stock one, giving it more of that Android feel. If you know of any other launchers that work with the Galaxy Gear, let us know below.

How To: Save Webpages for Offline Viewing in Chrome for Android

How To: Save Webpages for Offline Viewing in Chrome for Android
You may not always be connected to the internet, but if you're anything like me, your thirst for web content is insatiable. Whether you're on an airplane or stuck in an area with no reception, having some offline content stored on your Nexus can definitely save the day.Apps like Pocket offer a nice way to do this, but for those of us who like to keep our installed apps to a minimum, there's already a way to save webpages for offline viewing built right in to your Nexus 5 or other Nexus device. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.
The default web browser that came pre-installed on your Nexus 5 is Google's own Chrome. A wonderful mobile browser with many features, this app has a quick and easy way to save pages for later. You can even use Chrome to save webpages on other Android devices, not just Nexus ones.

How to Save Webpages for Offline ViewingJust load your favorite website, then tap the three-dot menu button. In here, select Print—this may sound strange, but hear me out. By default, Save to Google Drive is selected, but let's change that. Tap the drop-down menu here, and select Save as PDF. You can then choose whether you want your website saved in Portrait or Landscape for later viewing. Next, just tap Save. Chrome will now ask where you want to save your PDF. From the side menu of the next screen, select Downloads. Next, just tap the Save button at the bottom, and your PDF will be created.

How to View Your Saved PDF FilesNow, when you're out of range of data connections, you can easily access this webpage. Just open up the Downloads app from your app drawer and select the file you saved earlier.Your phone comes with another app pre-installed that is capable of viewing this PDF. It's called QuickOffice, and it will open automatically when you tap the file in Downloads (unless you have another PDF viewer, in which case you'll need to select an app to open your file). Now you don't have to worry about leaving your coverage area and having nothing to do. What are some websites that you've saved with Chrome? Do you prefer the simplicity of a built-in option over other offline reader services? Let us know in the comments section below.

How To: Install the Xposed Framework on Your HTC One to Easily Mod Your Phone

How To: Install the Xposed Framework on Your HTC One to Easily Mod Your Phone
Update: The installation process for Xposed Installer is now dead simple—check out our updated guide!Xposed is a framework created by XDA developer rovo89, which allows the end user to customize their stock or custom ROM without having to modify any system applications or files. It's pretty much the easiest way to install system mods on your HTC One without the hassle of custom recoveries, and it simplifies the process down to only a few taps.Keep in mind, root access is still required to install the framework, so make sure your HTC One or HTC One Google Play Edition is rooted before continuing. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.

Step 1: Enable 'Unknown Sources' in the SettingsBy default, Android does not let the user sideload APK files because it may present a security risk, since application files may contain malware and gain unwanted access to your phone. If you want to manually install an Android app via an APK file like we'll be doing, you'll need to grant access in the security settings. To do this, go to Settings -> Security and tap the Unknown Sources box.
Step 2: Download the Framework & Recovery ZIPTo install the Xposed Framework, you'll need the Xposed Installer APK and a ZIP file that you will need to flash in recovery.HTC protected the writing of the system partition on the phone, which is why you may have noticed if you make changes on the system partition that they are reverted when the phone is rebooted. This is prevented by installing the ZIP file, which I will cover in Step 4 and 5 below.Xposed Installer APK Xposed Install 2.1.4 ZIP Once you're done downloading the files, make sure to place them both on your internal storage (not placed in any folder). You could either download them onto your computer first, then transfer them to your device, or download them directly onto your HTC One.

Step 3: Install the ApplicationThe first thing you will need to do is install the Xposed Installer via the APK file. There are two ways to do this:If you downloaded the files above to your computer first and transferred them to your HTC One, you should install a file manager, such as ES File Explorer, and point it to /sdcard/0 to locate the APK file. Tap on it to open up the installer. If you downloaded the files above directly onto your HTC One, just open up your Notification tray, find the APK file, and tap on it to start the installer. Once it is done installing, open the app and tap Install/Update. You will get a prompt to grant superuser permissions. which you'll want to allow, and then it should install the framework. Don't tap reboot afterward—instead, shut the phone off with the Power button.
Step 4: Reboot into Recovery ModeWe'll now need to reboot into recovery mode to install the zip file you downloaded. Do the following to enter recovery.Turn off your device. Press and hold Volume Down and Power to boot into HBOOT. Press Volume Down to select Recovery. Press the Power button to confirm.

Step 5: Install the ZIP FileNow we're ready to flash the ZIP file to prevent the framework from being uninstalled upon rebooting.Tap install. Scroll down and fine the Xposed Install ZIP file and select it. Swipe to Confirm Flash. Reboot when it's finished.
Where Can I Get Modules? There are two main places to get Xposed Modules. There's a nice list of Modules on the XDA forums. The official repository. I'll also be covering some of the more popular modules soon, so stay tuned to HTC One softModder for more!

Installing ModulesTo install a module, you'll need to download one from one of the sources above. They will be packaged as an APK file, so once again, you will either need to download them on your phone using a web browser or download them on your computer and copy them to your internal storage and use a file manager to open them.As soon as you install the module, you will immediately notice a notification telling you to activate the module. Tap it and it will take you to the Xposed Installer app where you can manage and activate/deactivate modules. Tap the box to active or deactivate the module and reboot to complete the process. To complete the changes that you make, you'll need to reboot the device each time.
Be Careful of What the Modules Can DoAs with any Android modifications, you'll want to be careful as to what you apply. Be sure to make backups prior to making major changes in case something gets screwed up. Better to be safe than sorry!
Getting Rid of XposedLet's say you don't want Xposed anymore, there's an easy way to get rid of it. Just do the following.Open the Xposed Installer app. Tap Uninstall. Tap Clean up. Reboot the device. Uninstall the Xposed Installer and any modules you have installed.
Have Any Questions?Let us know in the comments below! And stay tuned, because like I said before, I'll be covering some of the best modules for Xposed soon.

So, today I'll be showing how to switch things up and make your passcode reflect the battery percentage displayed in your status bar instead. In order for this tweak to work, you will need to have a jailbroken iOS device. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.

Step 1: Enable Battery PercentageFor obvious reasons, you'll want to enable the battery percentage in your status bar. If you haven't done so already, navigate to Settings -> General -> Usage and toggle on "Battery Percentage."

Step 2: Install Battery PasscodeNow enter Cydia to search for and install "Battery Passcode" from developer Skumar Space. Once installed, your device will require a quick respring.

Step 3: Adjust Your SettingsBefore you lock your device, enter Settings and locate the Battery Passcode preferences. From there, you'll be able to enable the service and toggle on your original passcode as a failsafe. Once any changes are made, select the "Respring" option to restart your software.
Step 4: Use Your New Battery PasscodeEntering the passcode is easy enough; if the percentage is 100%, then enter 0-1-0-0. If the percentage is two digits, like 50%, then enter 0-0-5-0.On some occasions, the passcode may be a number over or under, so if it's at 35% and not unlocking, try entering 0-0-3-4 or 0-0-3-6. In any regard, if the battery percentage isn't unlocking your device, you'll be glad you had your original passcode enabled as a failsafe.Let us know what you think of Battery Passcode in the comments below, or hit us up on our Facebook and Twitter feeds.

How To: Product Chart Makes Finding Your Next Gadget Easy

How To: Product Chart Makes Finding Your Next Gadget Easy

You didn't have to attend this year's CES to have gadget envy. There are so many great smartphones, computers, laptops, and other gadgets available in the market that the real challenge becomes choosing the right one to fit your needs and your budget. While sites like Amazon and countless others offer reviews and product comparisons, they require a lot of reading on your end and, most of the time, require you to click through different review pages and videos. That's where Product Chart comes in.Product Chart makes it easy to find the great products you want and need, with easy-to-decipher graphs and filters. You can search for smartphones, laptops, MP3 players (yes, they still exist), flash drives, and even solid state drives. I've been in the market for a new laptop for about 6 months, but all the various configurations and options have left me stuck pinpointing want I really want. I'd like to stay with Apple, but with the filter guide. I can find comparable options from other manufacturers. Filter by specs and watch results automatically populate. Use the option panel located on the left of your screen to select specs for you laptop, like CPU, amount of RAM, desired screen size, weight, brand, and more. Highlight items you want to remember, then hover over the images to get a quick snapshot of the item's description. Highlighted items will turn green like so. Clicking on an item will take you directly to its Amazon page, where you can buy it on the spot or read reviews from other buyers. And remember, it's not just laptops. Near the bottom, under the "More" section, you can select between different product categories. Struggling with which Android phone you should buy next? Check out their smartphone filters and you'll be sure to find exactly what you need. Use the X and Y axes to easily divert your eyes to the cheaper options versus the more expensive ones (Price) or larger versus smaller items on the chart (Screen Size). The same rhetoric goes for MP3 players, flash drives, and SSDs. Product Chart is a super helpful and easy-to-use resource for anyone looking into a new gadget for work or play.Let us know what you think about their graphical display in the comment section below.

How To: Get Constantly Changing Wallpapers on Your Galaxy S3 That Adapt to Your Likes

How To: Get Constantly Changing Wallpapers on Your Galaxy S3 That Adapt to Your Likes
No matter how cool my 3D live wallpaper is, or how often my Google Now wallpapers automatically change, I always want more backgrounds. Zedge has made it easy for me to find new ones, and 500 Firepaper helps me keep my background lively with rotating wallpapers—but these aren't enough.Luckily, XDA forum member rden.april understands my need for new wallpapers and created Bitmado, an app that supplies an endless number of user-submitted images that can be applied to our Samsung Galaxy S3s. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.
You can follow certain communities, so you'll only receive wallpapers that interest you. Grab Bitmado for free on Google Play and let's take a walk through the app.

Getting Acquainted with Bitmado's InterfaceWhen first running the app, get familiar with Bitmado by looking at its detailed tutorial. The slides explain how to interact with the Bitmado interface and show you how to vote for wallpapers and follow "mados," or categories, like Movies or Urban.

Joining the Bitmado CommunityIn order to enjoy all of the benefits of the Bitmado community, we'll need to log in using a Google+ or Facebook account. With an account, we can save all of our preferences and actively participate in up-voting, bumping, and adding our own images to the Bitmado community. Once logged in, set Bitmado as the current LWP (live wallpaper).

Following New "Mados"The Front Page displays the currently "Hot" images by default. You can select what you want to appear in the front page in the drop-down menu. As you can see, each image is designated a category, or mado, that helps identify its theme. Select an image that you like and you'll be able to set that image as the current wallpaper or follow the mado to have the wallpaper change to images in the category. The mados we follow will be shown in the Manage Mados section.

Searching for New MadosYou don't have to rely on the front page to get your mados. Use "Explore" in the main menu to search for a mado by name, or scroll through the many already available. You can follow any mado that you like, but be careful, there are some that are NSFW, so make sure to only follow the mados you want to appear on your home screen. If you follow Random, there might be a random image of an ass cheek or something, so be cautious.

Changing the Shuffle FrequencyManually selecting a wallpaper that you want to apply immediately is called a Sticky, meaning that your selected wallpaper will remain in place until you want to change it, disabling the automatic shuffle. Click on the small pin next to the image to "Stick" it to your home screen. This can be changed by going into the app's settings and changing the Shuffle Frequency. Super will change the wallpaper every time you lock your phone.

Bumping & Up-Voting ImagesUp-voting an image helps to push it toward popularity, while a down-vote will remove that particular image from your wallpaper shuffle. A bump is similar to the Kudos we use here at WonderHowTo—the more bumps you give, the higher profile that image receives. You earn bumps by submitting your own images and voting on images submitted by others.

There Are Some Minor Lingering IssuesThere were a few times when the app lost its connection or showed me a server error, even though my data was working fine. This is problematic because if you can't access Bitmado, your wallpapers won't load and you'll be left with a giant black screen with the Bitmado's logo. All in all, Bitmado is an app with a lot of potential. The available wallpapers are endless and the fact that I don't have to touch a thing and can still get a bunch of cool wallpapers every time I open up my phone is pretty clutch. The app is fairly new, so I am hoping the connection issues will be fixed sooner rather than later.
