How To: Get Apple's Live Fish Wallpapers Back on Your iPhone

How To: Get Apple's Live Fish Wallpapers Back on Your iPhone
Remember the live fish wallpapers from iOS 9? They may be a fading memory at this point since Apple removed them all from the iPhone in iOS 11, but there is a way to get those fishies animated on your device again. They'll be live photos for your lock screen, which is as good as it will get until Apple lets us use all its live wallpapers, new and old, one day, which will probably never happen. While these are the original video files we'll be using for the fish animations, they won't act exactly like Apple's stock live wallpapers when we're done.Apple's default live wallpapers not only animate when you use 3D Touch on the display, but they move faster or slower depending on how much force you apply. When you lift your finger off the screen, the animation reverses back to the first frame. The only way to simulate this right now is by using a jailbreak tweak, and there is no public jailbreak for iOS 12 yet, though there is one for iOS 11.So our version of these fishy live wallpapers will act just like normal live photos that you turn into live wallpapers on your iPhone. They will animate when you use 3D Touch, but they will stop playing when they reach the end of the video, and they won't reverse back to the first frame.

Step 1: Download the Fishy FilesThere are six live fish wallpapers that Apple removed starting in iOS 11, and all of them are linked individually below as .m4v video files. However, there's no simple way to download individual video files on your iPhone, so we recommend to just download them all in a .zip file. If you choose the .zip file, you'll want to choose "More" in Safari, then "Save to Files." Then you can select "Preview Content" when viewing the .zip in the Files app, and use the share sheet to save each video to your Photos app.Orange Fish on White Background Light Blue Fish on White Background Blue/Orange Fish on White Background Blue/Yellow Fish on Black Background Blue/White Fish on Black Background Blue/Red Fish on Black Background

Step 2: Install a Video-to-Live-Photo ConverterIn order to turn the .m4v video files into live photos, we'll need to use a conversion app. There are some good paid ones in the iOS App Store, but free is always better. Paid options include Live Maker (subscription), Live Studio ($0.99), and intoLive Pro ($2.99). There are also a few free trial ones like LiveMaker Free which only lets you convert five videos before paying and haven't been updated in a long time.In our case, it's best to use intoLive, the free version. There are some limitations, but not for what we need. Plus, it was recently updated to work with iOS 12.App Store Link: intoLive - Live Wallpapers (free)

Step 3: Convert the Videos to Live PhotosOpen up the intoLive app (you will have to grant it access to your Photos library), make sure the "Video" tab is selected, then choose the fish video file you want to convert. On the edit screen, just tap the "Make" button in the top right. Next, choose "No repeat" on the popup unless you want to pay to repeat the animation twice, three times, or five times. After you've made your choice, tap "Save Live Photos" on the next screen and it will be saved to your Photos app as a live photo. You will have to watch an ad or two, but it's worth it for the price of free.Don't Miss: How to Turn GIFs into Live Photos on Your iPhone

Step 4: Set as Your Live WallpaperYou can set your new live fish photo as your wallpaper. Go to "Wallpaper" in the Settings app, select "Choose a New Wallpaper," then choose your live photo. In this guide, however, I'll show you how to do it straight from the Photos app, so go ahead and open that up.Open up the live photo, then tap the share sheet icon in the bottom left. On the bottom row of options, tap the "Use as Wallpaper" option, then tap "Set." On the prompt, select "Set Lock Screen," and you're done. It would be nice if Apple kept all its previous wallpapers and just added to them in new iOS updates, but for some reason, Apple feels the need to completely remove older ones to highlight fresher backgrounds associated with new iPhones. How To: Make Siri Play Spotify Music on Your iPhone

How To: Make Siri Play Spotify Music on Your iPhone
Apple has slowly opened up functionality for Siri, allowing the personal assistant to recognize songs, toggle settings off and on, make purchases, post to Facebook and Twitter, and much, much more. While it's rumored that Siri's third-party app integration will expand in the near future, it's not exactly known when. With the AssistantLove 2 Beta jailbreak tweak, from the development team at Delta, you can add at least some third-party integration by allowing Siri to play music from Spotify.Just make sure you have a jailbroken iOS 8 device before continuing. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.

Step 1: Install the Delta RepoAssistantLove 2 Beta is not currently available through any existing Cydia repos, since it's not full ready for primetime. Instead, you'll need to go to the Cydia application, find "Sources," tap "Edit," then "Add."In the text box that appears, type in "getdelta.co," then tap on "Add Source." After a few seconds, a new source will appear called "Delta"—this is where the tweak is located.

Step 2: Install AssistantLove 2 BetaNow "Install" AssistantLove 2 Beta, then tap on "Restart SpringBoard" so that your phone reboots and the tweak takes effect.

Step 3: Use Siri to Play Songs from SpotifyNow bring up Siri and issue a command to play a song from a certain artist. Once Siri recognizes the song (which was incredibly accurate for me), it will open up Spotify and play the song.Note: Make sure you don't ask Siri to play a song you already have saved on your device, or else she'll play that version and not the one on Spotify. If you have a paid GrooveShark account, you can also pull music from there if you don'y have Spotify. The tweak didn't work 100% of the time; recognizing the song but not always playing it. Since this is a beta, this isn't all that surprising, but expect these issues to be fixed by the time it's officially released. Are there any other Cydia apps or tweaks that have caught your attention? Let us know in the comments below.

How To: Revert Back to the Classic Google Maps Version for Desktop

How To: Revert Back to the Classic Google Maps Version for Desktop
When the Google Maps web app got a massive redesign earlier this year, I was pretty excited to try it out, but it was a fairly disappointing update for me. The slower load times, confusing street view, and bicyclist neglect are just a few of the reasons I don't enjoy it over the old classic Google Maps. The brand new drag-and-drop measuring tool released this week is actually pretty useful, but not enough to change my mind. So, if you're feeling nostalgia for the service that actually worked, join me and revert back to old Google Maps forever. But first, let's talk more in depth about what's going on in the new Maps version. Scroll down to the bottom if you just want to revert right now.
What's Wrong with New Google Maps?Introduced earlier this year, the new Google Maps premiered its vector-based architecture Google MapsGL. This feature, based on a JavaScript API called WebGL, delivers 3D graphics inside of your browser. It sounds cool and looks pretty, but is it worth the excruciatingly long loading times? Probably not, especially because there are a number of user interface design flaws in the map as well.

Street View Is Treated Like a Neglected Step-ChildThe gas pedal of a car doesn't need to be moved because we all know where it's at and how it works. Why did Google feel the need to shove the little Street View man into a corner? Is he in trouble? New Google Maps: Street View guy in the corner, with not directional arrow for placement. When you finally do find him and decide to drop him somewhere, you have to hold left-click until the Street View thumbnail loads, or he'll just be sent back to his corner. Old Google Maps: Street View guy on the left, with directional arrow during placement. Unlike the old version, the new street man doesn't let you know which way he's facing. There's no little green arrow to tell you if he's looking North, East, South, or West -pretty damn inconvenient, though once you're actually in Street View, you can see it.

It's Almost Useless for BikersGreat, new Google Maps offers directions with a bunch of weird multicolored lines, but how do I quickly look at terrain, and where in God's name are the bike routes?! New Google Maps: Not as biker-friendly as before. New Maps is terrible for bikers. On old Maps, you simply put in your directions, and selected the "Bicycling" and "Terrain" options to get a pretty good idea of the safest and least difficult route. Old Google Maps: Easier for bikers to navigate faster. Image via wonderhowto.com New maps? Not so much. In fact, it doesn't even offer basic directions for bikers unless you click the three almost-invisible small dots in the search bar. Not a big deal, but as someone who bikes around town a lot, it bugs me.

If You Ever Figure Out How to Print, You'll Be DisappointedSome of us still print things. It comes in handy during long trips when we know we won't have access to Wi-Fi and don't want to resort to offline maps on a mobile. Old Google Maps: The super easy to find and click Print button. So, like old Maps, there should be an easily accessible print button on new Maps, right? That would just be too easy. New Maps has hidden the print icon behind another little link named "List all steps," which is itself hidden in the search bar. New Google Maps: You have to list all steps first before printing anything out. Image via wonderhowto.com Once you access it and click the print icon, you'll notice a lot less options than older Google Maps. New Google Maps: Less print options. Image via wonderhowto.com Remember how old Maps let you add comments, include Street View, and modify the way your map was printed? New Maps did away with all that and just prints it for you in some ambiguous display. Old Google Maps: You can enter notes!

Completely & Absolutely Useless for Road TripsOld Google Maps led me through several amazing road trips. However, for some reason Google decided to remove just about much every useful road-tripping feature Maps had to offer.Look at the beautiful map below. Not only is the terrain visible and each of the destinations clearly pinned, but there are hundreds of thumbnails of scenic sights for you to consider visiting along the way. That is what road tripping is all about! Old Google Maps: A better road trip view. Now look at the following image. Yes, the one with the map that hardly exists. There are no thumbnails, no ways to view traffic and terrain, and you can't even add new cities to your route without redoing the entire map. New Google Maps: Not so great for road-tripping. Image via wonderhowto.com

How to Revert Back to the Old-Style Maps for GoodGoogle knew you'd want to revert back, so they made it easy for you. At least, for now. There's no telling when this option will disappear, but you can get it while it's hot. Just like everything else important, the option is hidden in the right corner. Locate the question mark icon and click it. 1. Tap on the "?" icon. In bold, the very first option that appears is "Return to classic Google Maps." Huh, maybe something that's classic shouldn't be changed. Anyway, select this option. 2. Select "Return to classic Google Maps". Now, before clicking the blue text that says "Return to classic Google Maps," make sure you let them know your thoughts and check the box next to "Prefer classic Google Maps." Maybe they'll take a hint. 3. Give feedback before reverting. To seal the deal, click "Yes" when asked if you'd like to "Remember this choice for next time." Unless, of course, you enjoy being confused and angry. 4. Click "Yes" for it to remember your preference. And that's it. I know there's a lot to love and hate about the new Google Maps, and everyone has their own opinion. So, let us know your thoughts on the latest design below.

How To: Share Albums in Google Photos

How To: Share Albums in Google Photos
There's a feature in Google's Photos app for Android, iOS, and the web that lets you create shared albums with your friends and family. It's really a useful feature that makes it fun and easy to collaborate on an album with a person or persons of your choosing. It allows for some wonderful things, like going to a concert with a group of friends, taking a bunch of pictures, and dumping them into a single album. Or, say you're vacationing with your significant other and you really want to capture the experience so you can share it later with your mother, you know, that person who is always saying you never take enough pictures—well, now you can.Don't Miss: How to Transfer ALL Your Pics to Google Photos It's a great feature to have, but a little tricky if you've never used it before, or are new to Google Photos. But don't worry, we'll show you how it's done.
Step 1: Install Google PhotosIf you're planning on using Google Photos on Android or iOS, head over the to the Google Play store or iOS App Store and download the Google Photos application.Install Google Photos for Android Install Google Photos for iOS Additionally, Google Photos can be used from within a desktop browser as well and we'll show you how to create a Shared Album on both your mobile device and on your desktop browser.

Step 2: Create a Shared AlbumCreating a shared album on mobile is simple, and there are a few other ways to do it, but this is the easiest. Once inside the mobile application, select the "+" sign. This will bring up a menu that will give you the option of creating a shared album—select Shared album to get started. Once you select Shared album, Google Photos will prompt you to begin selecting photographs for your new album. Select as many as you wish, it's your album!Once you're done selecting your photos, select Create at the top right of the screen. After this, name your album and then select Share on the top right of the screen. Google Photos will give you a link to the album that you can now share with whoever you wish. Make sure that "Let others add their photos" is selected, otherwise, the person you're sharing the album with will only be able to view photos, not add to them. Once you've provided the link to your desired person, they'll now be able to add photos to the album whenever they wish. To keep adding photos to a shared album, simply select the photos you wish to add, then select the "+" symbol at the top right of the application. At the bottom will be your shared albums—find the shared album you wish to add pictures to and select it. Creating a shared album on a desktop browser is very much the same process. First, you're going to need to visit Google Photos website. At the top right of the screen, there will be the "+" symbol. Select it and click shared album. Google Photos will now prompt you to select your photos. Just like last time, Google Photos will prompt you to select your photos, create your album, name it, and then give you a link to share.

Step 3: Show People Your Albums! As you add photos to your shared album, you're probably going to want to show off your album to other people you didn't share it with already... you know, like your mother. To do this, access the slide-out menu on the left, go to shared albums, find the album you wish to share, select the three vertical dots, and select copy link. This will give you a link that you can send to whoever wants to follow your album. If you only want the person to view the album, make sure to uncheck "Let others add their photos."On a desktop browser, the process is nearly identical. Simply access the menu on the left, select Shared albums, choose your album you wish to share, click the share button (three dots with interconnecting lines), and Google Photos will then provide you with a link. Make sure to follow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Google+, or Twitter!

How To: Make Google Now Obey Custom Voice CommandsEven Without Root

How To: Make Google Now Obey Custom Voice CommandsEven Without Root
It seems like custom Google Now commands are a dime a dozen these days. With Commandr for Google Now giving non-rooted users their first taste of custom voice commands just a couple weeks ago, you may wonder why we're covering this subject again.Unlike Commandr, the app AutoVoice allows you to enter any command that you'd like to use, and have it execute almost any function that your phone is capable of by way of Tasker.I've covered this combination of apps to some extent in the past, but a recent update to AutoVoice removes the root requirement that it had before, opening up the limitless custom voice commands it offers to far more users. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.

Step 1: Install AutoVoiceDeveloper João Dias has made a free version of his app, AutoVoice, available on Google Play, so search it by name to get it installed. If you're reading this from your Android device, you can head to this link to jump directly to the install page.

Step 2: Configure AutoVoiceWith the app installed, go ahead and launch AutoVoice. There's a tiny bit of initial setup that's needed in order to make the service work on a non-rooted device. First up, close out any messages that the free version of this app shows you. Next up, scroll down a bit and tap the Google Now Integration menu entry. From here, hit the Not Enabled button, and you'll be taken into your device's Accessibility menu. Next, just select the AutoVoice entry on the following screen, then toggle the switch at the top-right to ON. Afterwards, press OK on the dialog box that comes up. When you're done with that, you're done with AutoVoice's initial setup.

Step 3: Install TaskerAutoVoice serves as a plugin to the infinitely-powerful automation app Tasker. The only version of Tasker that's available on the Play Store is a paid app, so if you want to go that route, I'd certainly recommend it.But if you'd rather try before you buy, Tasker's developer has made a free 7-day trial available on his website. Just use your Android device to navigate to this link and the installer file will immediately begin downloading. Before you can install this app, you'll need to make sure your phone allows you to install apps from outside of the Play Store. Do this by heading to Settings, then Security, and ticking the box next to Unknown Sources. Press OK on the popup that appears afterwards. With that out of the way, just tap the Download complete notification for the Tasker.4.4.apk file you just downloaded. This will launch Android's install process, so tap the Install button on the next screen. When that's finished, tap Open.

Step 4: Create a Tasker ProfileAutoVoice will intercept commands that you give to Google Now, then relay them to Tasker so that you can execute almost any action. In order for Tasker to know what you want it to do, first you'll have to set up a Profile. In layman's terms, a Tasker Profile is a condition (or set of conditions) that must be met before Tasker will execute a Task. Conversely, Tasks are actions that can be triggered by your Profile's conditions. Tasks can be as simple as opening an app, or as complicated as executing terminal commands. You can even attach multiple actions to a Task, and Tasker will execute these actions in sequential order as soon as your Profile's conditions are met. With that in mind, from Tasker's main screen, hit the Plus button at the bottom to create a new Profile. This Profile will be powered by AutoVoice's Google Now command-interception function, and you will be asked to enter this command at a later point. For now, choose State from the following menu. Since AutoVoice is a separate app, rather than a built-in function of Tasker, choose Plugin from the next menu. After that, since we're looking to create a profile that is triggered by a word or phrase that AutoVoice recognizes from a Google Now voice search, choose AutoVoice Recognized. At this point, the basic groundwork for your Profile has been laid. Tasker now knows that you want it to look for a specific AutoVoice Recognized event, but AutoVoice does not yet know what word or phrase that event will be represented by.

Step 5: Configure a Word/Phrase to SpeakIn order to configure a specific word or phrase that, when spoken to Google Now in a voice search, will meet the conditions of your new Profile, tap the pencil-shaped Edit button at the top-right. This will take you into AutoVoice, and after that, close out any messages or ads given to you by the free version of the app. Now it's time to set the word or phrase that you want to use as a trigger for your Tasker Profile. Select Command Filter to enter this phrase. The free version of AutoVoice is limited to commands that consist of four or fewer letters. Nonetheless, there are thousands of words in the English language that meet this criteria, so get creative. Think of a word that will be an appropriate command for the Task that you want to trigger.I'll demonstrate with the word Mute, because I want my AutoVoice Recognized Profile to trigger a Task that will mute my phone's ringer. After you've typed in your command, tap OK and then hit the Check icon near the top-right.

Step 6: Create a TaskNow, with your AutoVoice Recognized profile configured, tap the Back button on your device to head back out to Tasker's main screen. At this point, Tasker will automatically ask you to create a Task that this profile will trigger, so tap New Task. You can add a name for this Task, but this is optional, as it's for your own reference. Next, tap the Plus button at the bottom of the screen to add an action to your task. The next menu gives you a glimpse of Tasker's immense array of capabilities. There are several different categories to choose from that, themselves, contain many different actions that your Task can execute. Use the FIlter function here to search for the action you're looking to perform. In my case, where I'm trying to mute my phone's ringer when I say the word "Mute" to Google Now, I can find that under the Audio category, then the Ringer Volume subcategory. When you add such an action to your Task, you'll be given a chance to adjust the specific value that will be set by your AutoVoice Recognized command. Set your value, then press the Back button on your device to head back to the Task Edit screen. At this point, if you only want your AutoVoice recognized command to execute a Task with one action, you're all set. But, if you'd like to add more actions to this task (e.g., mute ringer, then set vibration to ON), you can hit the Plus button to add another such action. Either way you go, just back all the way out of Tasker to make your Profile become active.
Step 7: Executing Your Custom Voice CommandYou can now run your Task by simply stating your AutoVoice Recognized command to Google Now. So for me, I'll just say "Okay Google, Mute", and my phone's ringer will be muted. This is because AutoVoice intercepted my command, then relayed it over to Tasker, and Tasker saw that the criteria for my Profile was met, so it executed my Task. And all of that happened in a fraction of a second! To add more custom voice commands, just follow these same steps again. Create a new AutoVoice Recognized profile, then enter a new word in Step 4. Make this word perform a new action by creating another task like the one outlined in Step 5. Remember, you're only limited by your own imagination here (or the 4-character limit if you're still using the free version of AutoVoice). What are some of the AutoVoice Recognized profiles that you've created? What Tasks are you triggering when that Profile's conditions are met, and have you tried reaching insane levels like the video below? Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.
