Magisk 101: How to Install Magisk & Root with TWRP

Magisk 101: How to Install Magisk & Root with TWRP
There are a few different ways to install Magisk. If you're already rooted and you just want access to Magisk modules, you can use Magisk Manager to install the Magisk framework. Or, if you want to pass SafetyNet on a rooted device, you can switch from SuperSU to Magisk SU. But the best way to do it is to start fresh by installing Magisk on a non-rooted phone using TWRP.The main reason we prefer this method is because it's the cleanest. No need to remove old root binaries, just flash the Magisk ZIP and you'll be good to go. In doing so, you'll actually root your phone and install Magisk in one shot, plus you're far more likely to pass SafetyNet's CTS Profile check this way.Don't Miss: How to Switch from SuperSU to Magisk & Pass SafetyNet
Step 1: Install TWRPThis method works by flashing the Magisk ZIP in TWRP, so you'll need to install the custom recovery before you begin. Much like Magisk itself, there are multiple ways to install TWRP. If you're rooted, you can use this method, but note that you'll have to do a full unroot in SuperSU after you're done.If your phone has a Fastboot interface (most phones do), you can use this guide to install TWRP. Just follow steps 1–5 exactly as they're depicted, then use Method 2 in Step 7 to flash the TWRP image file for your particular model. If your phone does not have a Fastboot interface, the instructions for installing TWRP will vary. We've covered many of these methods in separate tutorials that are linked out in the following guide, so this is a perfect place to start:Don't Miss: The Ultimate Guide to Using TWRP — The Only Custom Recovery You'll Ever Need

Step 2: Install Magisk ManagerOnce you've got TWRP installed successfully, boot into Android and install the Magisk Manager app. This isn't the Magisk framework, which provides root access and the ability to install Magisk modules. It's simply an app for downloading and updating the Magisk framework and managing modules. The Magisk Manager app is no longer available on the Play Store, so you'll need to have "Unknown Sources" enabled to install it. Other than that, just head to the following link, which will show you all available versions of the Magisk Manager app. Download the newest version, then when that's finished, tap the Download complete notification to launch the APK. Finally, press "Install" when prompted.Download Magisk Manager from APKMirror (.apk)

Step 3: Download the Magisk ZIPNext, open the Magisk Manager app. You'll get a popup asking if you'd like to install the Magisk framework. Tap "Install" here, then hit "Download Zip Only" on the subsequent popup. Wait until you see a message at the bottom of the app's main menu stating that the file has been downloaded.

Step 4: Flash Magisk in TWRPNext, boot your phone into recovery mode, then tap the "Install" button in TWRP's main menu. From there, navigate to your device's Download folder, then select the Magisk ZIP. After that, just swipe the slider at the bottom of the screen to install Magisk, then tap "Reboot System."

Step 5: Verify Root & SafetyNet StatusNext, go ahead and open the Magisk Manager app. If everything went off without a hitch, you'll see a message towards the top of the screen that says "MAGISKSU (topjohnwu)" with a green check mark next to it. This means your phone is now officially rooted, and since it was done with Magisk, it's a systemless root.Aside from that, the main advantage of Magisk is that you can have root without tripping SafetyNet. To verify that your phone still passes Google's SafetyNet check, press the corresponding button towards the top of the screen. If you see two extra green check marks after this test is run, you're all set to go! If your phone doesn't seem to want to pass the SafetyNet test at this point, it's likely because of leftover modified files from a previous root method or system mod. You'll have to do a bit of troubleshooting to fix it, but we've got you covered — just follow each of the steps at the following link:Don't Miss: How to Fix SafetyNet 'CTS Profile' & 'Basic Integrity' Errors with MagiskFollow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, YouTube, and Instagram Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Google+

How To: 6 Useful Android Gestures You Might Not Know About Already

How To: 6 Useful Android Gestures You Might Not Know About Already
People like to cite the iPhone as the device that started the smartphone craze, but the truth is, smartphones had existed for years by the time Apple got into the game. The real groundbreaking feature that this device brought to the table was a multi-touch screen to go along with its "smart" functionality, and this is still the main method we use to interact with our devices today. Then of course with multi-touch technology, there was a massive influx of new gestures, many of which utilized more than one finger. Android devices are no exception to this rule, as they're packed with plenty of gestures that let you access key functions quickly.Don't Miss: How to Get Apple's Force Touch Feature on Android But several of these Android gestures aren't very easy to discover, and there isn't really a guide to introduce you to all of them. So to clarify things—and hopefully speed up your smartphone usage a bit—I'll go over six of the most useful hidden gestures on Android.

Gesture 1: Faster Quick Settings AccessThis first relatively unknown Android gesture will give you quicker access to your Quick Settings toggles, which allow you to turn settings like Wi-Fi or Bluetooth on or off. As it stands, depending on your Android version, you have to swipe down from the top of your screen to expand the notification tray, then either tap a button or swipe down again to see your Quick Settings toggles.Instead of doing all of that, simply swipe down from the top of your screen using two fingers. Regardless of your Android version, this will immediately open your Quick Settings toggles and skip the extra swipe or tap.

Gesture 2: Custom Home Button ShortcutI'm sure you're already aware of the Google Now Shortcut on Android, which allows you to quickly access Google search by long-pressing or swiping up from your home button. But did you know this gesture can be replaced entirely? All you have to do is install a compatible app, then trigger the gesture by swiping up or long-pressing your home button. With the gesture-changing app installed, your phone or tablet will prompt you to select a default app for this action—just choose your newly-installed app, then press "Always." From now on, every time you long-press or swipe up from your home button, your custom app will launch instead. There are several apps that you can use to replace this gesture—you can set it to turn your screen off, use it to launch any app, or even disable the gesture altogether.

Gesture 3: Easy Chrome Tab SwitchingAs Chrome comes pre-installed on most Android devices, it's the most commonly-used web browser amongst Android users. Its tabbed interface makes keeping track of your favorite websites extremely easy—but with gestures, this process can be even easier. If you'd like to enter the tab switcher in Chrome, simply swipe down from the address bar at the top of the screen. From here, you can scroll vertically to flip between your open tabs, then even swipe left or right to close a tab. As an alternative, you can simply swipe left or right on Chrome's address bar to flip between your open tabs directly. And these gestures even work on the ad-free Chrome variant, NoChromo.

Gesture 4: App Info ShortcutFor this next gesture to work, you'll need to be running Android Lollipop or higher, and you'll also need to enable Developer options on your Android device. That may sound complicated, but it's actually really simple—just open Settings, then head to "About Phone" or "About Tablet." From here, tap the "Build Number" entry 7 times in rapid succession, then you'll see a toast message saying that "You are now a developer." Don't Miss: Full Guide on Enabling Developer Options Now that you have Developer options enabled, you can use the gesture. It's best for those times when an app is acting up and you need to either clear its data or force it to stop altogether. So if you're experiencing trouble with an app, just tap the task switcher button on your phone or tablet, then long-press the app's icon in the "Recent Apps" view. From here, you'll be taken directly to the "App info" page for this app, where you can force stop or clear data to stop any buggy behavior.

Gesture 5: Enter Safe ModeThis next gesture can be a lifesaver if you're having trouble with third-party apps. Android actually has a built-in "Safe Mode" that runs without any third-party apps, which allows you to uninstall a problematic app if you're having serious issues. To begin, just press and hold your device's power button to bring up the regular power menu. From here, long-press the "Power Off" option, then you'll see a pop-up asking if you'd like to enter Safe Mode. Press "OK" on this popup, then your device will boot into Safe Mode automatically. To get back out of safe mode, just reboot your device normally.

Gesture 6: Easy One-Fingered ZoomThis last Android gesture is easily my favorite. For easy one-fingered zooming in apps like Google Maps and Chrome, just double tap your screen—but don't let go after the second tap. Instead, while you're still holding your finger on the screen, slide your finger up or down to zoom in and out. It may take a couple of tries to get the gesture down pat, but once you do, it's the most natural way to zoom in and out of images and maps. Are there any relatively unknown Android gestures that we missed? If so, let us know about them in the comment section below, or drop us a line on Android Hacks' Facebook or Twitter, or Gadget Hacks' Facebook, Google+, or Twitter.

News: The Best Accessories to Buy for Your Headphones Jack-Less iPhone 7
Apple caught a lot of flak for removing the headphone jack in their iPhone 7 models, but they definitely got the last laugh when preorders with a delivery date of September 16 sold out within minutes. Headphone jack or not, the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus are still highly desirable products, and consumers have confirmed this by voting with their wallets. If you decided to take the risk and get an iPhone 7 knowing you'd miss the headphones jack, well, you'll just have to embrace Apple's new wireless world. Luckily, there are Bluetooth devices and adapters to fill your every need—car audio, home stereo, headphones, and more—so you won't even miss that 3.5 mm jack at all.Don't Miss: The iPhone 7's Lack of a Headphone Jack Creates a Big MacBook Problem

Car Audio AccessoriesFor this first section, we'll focus on getting your new iPhone 7 connected to your car wirelessly. If your car already has built-in Bluetooth, that would probably be your best bet—but for everyone else, these Bluetooth adapters have you covered in spades.Nulaxy Bluetooth FM TransmitterIf your car didn't come with an auxiliary headphone jack input, the best way to hook your iPhone 7 up to the stereo without using wires is to grab a Bluetooth receiver that broadcasts your tunes over FM radio. Out of these, our favorite is the Nulaxy Bluetooth FM Transmitter, which lets you control music playback, make and receive calls, and even select your broadcast frequency with its LCD display.Buy Nulaxy Bluetooth FM Transmitter from Amazon (currently $22.99) The Nulaxy Bluetooth FM Transmitter broadcasts directly to your radio. Image via Amazon SoundBot Auxiliary Car KitIf your car has an auxiliary 3.5 mm jack, the sound quality will be slightly better if you go with a Bluetooth adapter that plugs directly into your stereo. Out of these types of products, the most highly recommended option is the SoundBot Auxiliary Car Kit. This comes with a small disc that you mount anywhere in your car to serve as an in-call microphone and music playback controller. Attached to this is one wire that has two plugs on the end—one goes into your car's auxiliary input, and the other plugs into an included USB charger.Buy SoundBot Auxiliary Car Kit from Amazon (currently $19.99) SoundBot's Auxiliary Car Kit makes Bluetooth audio a breeze. Image via Amazon Bluetrip Auxiliary Car KitIf you'd like a more subtle solution, the Bluetrip Auxiliary Car Kit is functionally identical to SoundBot's kit, but it plugs directly into your cigarette lighter port with an ultra-low profile. From there, you just run a headphone cable over to your car's auxiliary input, then pair your iPhone to start playing some tunes.Buy Bluetrip Auxiliary Car Kit from Amazon (currently $30) The Bluetrip Auxiliary Car Kit is one of the most subtle solutions. Home Stereo AccessoriesNext up, we'll focus on getting your iPhone paired with your home theater system, stereo, or just a set of speakers. If you're all-in with Apple, you might have an AirPlay solution for this, but otherwise, these adapters will keep the tunes flowing throughout your house by simply adding Bluetooth functionality to your existing setup.Audioengine Premium ReceiverIf you want the absolute top of the line, your best option is the Audioengine Premium Receiver. This small box plugs into your home stereo system with either RCA outputs or a digital/optical audio jack (S/PDIF), and an included antenna extends the range of your iPhone's Bluetooth connection. A 24-bit digital-to-analog converter (DAC) ensures top-notch sound, and a milled aluminum enclosure makes the box itself a nice piece of hardware.Buy Audioengine Premium Receiver from Amazon (currently $189) The Audioengine Premium Receiver supports optical audio output and high-end sound. Image via Amazon HomeSpot Bluetooth AdapterFor a more cost-effective solution, the HomeSpot Bluetooth Adapter will pair your iPhone 7 with your home stereo at a cost of only $13. This small box supports mini-jack and RCA output, so it will work with almost any setup, and it even has a cool NFC function that will let your friends with Android devices pair with your stereo in one tap.Buy HomeSpot Bluetooth Adapter from Amazon (currently $19.57) The HomeSpot Bluetooth Adapter hooks your iPhone up to your stereo without breaking the bank. Image via Amazon Logitech Bluetooth AdapterIn the same vein as the HomeSpot box, the Logitech Bluetooth Adapter simply plugs into your stereo, then offers to pair itself with your iPhone for music playback. However, this option sports a more premium build quality, and offers direct RCA output, which should give a slight bump in audio quality over the HomeSpot's mini-jack adapter.Buy Logitech Bluetooth Adapter from Amazon (currently $23.98) The Logitech Bluetooth Adapter is a perfect midrange option for pairing your iPhone with a home stereo system. Image via Amazon

Bluetooth HeadphonesNext up, we'll look at some of the best options for wireless Bluetooth headphones. Apple's own AirPods will be a popular choice here, but they're not even out yet. Plus, if you'd rather have a bit more battery life or headphones that aren't so easily lost, the options we'll cover below would be a much better fit.Beats Headphones with Apple's W1 ChipNow that Apple owns Beats headphones, we're starting to see a renewed focus on high-quality wireless audio. In fact, Apple included their special W1 wireless processor in its latest Beats lineup, so audio performance and power efficiency should be similar to what you'd see with AirPods. But the best thing about this option is the variety—you've got three different models to choose from, so if AirPods are too tiny for your tastes, you'll find a perfect fit with Beats.Buy Beats Solo3 Headphones from Apple ($299.95) Buy BeatsX Earphones from Apple ($149.95) (coming soon) Buy PowerBeats3 Wireless Earphones from Apple ($199.95) From left to right: Beats Solo3, BeatsX, and PowerBeats3 headphones. Image via Apple LG Tone InfinimFor a non-Apple solution, LG Tone Infinim earbuds are hard to beat. The wireless headset features a lightweight flexible base that you wear around your neck, which houses an ample battery, call microphone, and buttons to control your music. The earbuds themselves are wired, but retract into the base for easy storage. Then, when you factor in top-notch sound, and battery life that's over three times greater than Apple's AirPods, LG Tone Infinim headphones are a steal at less than $100.Buy LG Tone Infinim from Amazon (currently $99.99) LG Tone Infinim earbuds have 16-hour battery life & top-notch sound. Image via Amazon Cowin E-7 Series HeadphonesIf you're a fan of traditional can-style headphones, the Cowin E-7 Series Headphones offer a great balance of performance and affordability. With active noise cancelling for crystal-clear audio, superb build quality, and ridiculous 30-hour battery life, you'll wonder why you ever used those basic EarPods to begin with.Buy Cowin E-7 Series Headphones from Amazon (currently $69.99) Cowin E-7 Series Headphones offer premium quality at a budget price. Charging While Listening to MusicIf you absolutely must use wired headphones with your iPhone 7, the included EarPods should do the trick, or you can use the mini-jack-to-Lightning adapter that came with your phone. But either way you go, you won't be able to charge your iPhone 7 while listening to music unless you buy some extra equipment. We've already covered all of the best ways to charge while jamming out, so make sure to check out the following guide for more info on this front.Don't Miss: How to Charge Your iPhone 7 While Listening to Music Image via Belkin Don't Miss: You'll Need New Accessories for the iPhone 7, Even Though It Looks the SameFollow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, and YouTube Follow Apple Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Google+

How To: Everyone Should Buy a Gaming Phone Not Just Fortnite Junkies

How To: Everyone Should Buy a Gaming Phone Not Just Fortnite Junkies

Last year, Razer kicked off a new trend by building a smartphone from the ground up with mobile gamers in mind. At the time, many thought the Razer Phone solved a problem that no one really had — but a year later, we're starting to see that gaming phones are perfect for more than just Fortnite players.Because gamers demand so much of their devices, gaming products are usually made with the very best components. Gamers don't just want to play games, they want to enjoy them at the highest resolution settings while maintaining a high frame rate with minimal latency. It is not enough for a phone to have a large display, it also has to have amazing picture quality and a high refresh rate. And audio isn't an afterthought, it's an essential component of the immersive experience and its quality should be on par with the video it's synced to.Once you list out the criteria demanded by the gaming community, you realize that other communities share many of these must-haves. While most flagship phones share similar design and specs, gaming phones are pushing the envelope. This results in amazing phones like the ASUS ROG Phone and Razer Phone 2, which not only excel at gaming, but maximize the experience of watching movies and listening to music. Yes, the "gaming design" isn't for everyone. But look a little deeper and you'll see that these gaming phones might be best for your specific needs.

More Than Just GamingWhen it comes down to it, media consumers and gamers want many of the same things: big displays, excellent picture quality, nice speakers, a large battery, and a powerful modem for fast cellular data. OEMs are trying to provide this experience to gamers, but in the process, they're helping non-gamers as well. When we ranked the best phones for watching movies earlier this year, the Razer Phone was number three on our list. Its industry-leading speakers, great screen, and excellent battery life allowed it to easily make our list. As the only gaming phone at the time, it stood out among the crowd.Fast forward to our recent revision of this list, and things have changed. The Razer Phone 2 just barely missed the cut, but two other gaming-centric phones made the list: the ASUS ROG Phone and the Samsung Galaxy Note 9. And not only did they make our list, but they topped it, taking the number one and number two spots. Image by HardwareCanucks/YouTube One of the reasons ASUS and Samsung were able to rank so highly on our list was because of Razer — specifically, the shortcomings of their first product. Both ASUS and Samsung attempted to address many of the issues with the first Razer Phone while matching what it did so well. One example is the headphone jack, which the Razer Phone didn't include. Because of the backlash, ASUS made sure to include it in the ROG Phone.Speaking of audio, remember when phones used to include front-facing speakers? This feature has all but died thanks to the push toward bezel-less phones, but it's making a comeback in gaming phones. For instance, the Razer Phone 2 sacrificed aesthetics for two of the largest front-facing speakers on any phone. So while it doesn't have the 18:9 aspect ratio or the small forehead and chin, it does have speakers that rival some external Bluetooth speakers, which is perfect for gaming, watching movies, or listening to some music. And when front-facing isn't possible, other gaming phones like the Galaxy Note 9 make sure to include stereo speakers using the front earpiece and a bottom-firing speaker. If you enjoy music, there are few phones that will provide a better audio experience than some of the gaming phones released this year. Even when gaming phones such as the Razer Phone 2 don't include a headphone jack, they still take audio seriously. The Razer Phone 2 (like its predecessor) has one of the best dongles on the market thanks to its THX certification. It can easily drive the most expensive headphone and deliver industry-leading audio quality. Image by Austin Evans/YouTube The non-gaming benefits of gaming phones don't stop there. For processor-intensive tasks, gaming phones include optimized SoCs that will help even when you're not playing a game. The ASUS ROG Phone has a special edition of the Snapdragon 845 that's specifically designed to maintain an overclocked speed. Every ROG Phone can handle the 2.96 GHz overclock comfortably without the need to throttle. And, even when overclocking isn't necessary, most gaming phones including some form of additional cooling to prevent thermal throttling. Image via ASUS The benefits of gaming phones extend to productivity and multitasking. Every gaming phone has an 8 GB RAM option, so you'll never slow down because of lack of memory. Apps no longer need to reload after you switch away since they remain cached in the RAM. And for those enjoy split screen mode and picture-in-picture, the high RAM found in gaming phones will make sure this performs well too.Gamers demand the very best from their components, and this is something that everyone can enjoy. Whether you like watching movies, listening to music, or just getting a lot done, gaming phones can help. While the RGB effects and design language aren't for everyone, their unmatched performance and versatility are hard to pass on.This article was produced during Gadget Hacks' annual Movies & TV on Mobile special coverage. Google Play Music 101: How to Adjust Music Quality to Save Data While Listening

Google Play Music 101: How to Adjust Music Quality to Save Data While Listening
The nemesis of music streamers is data caps, cell phone or otherwise. Restricting monthly data and forcing users to decide between quantity and quality of music has had audiophiles tearing their hair out since streaming toppled the iPod. While the problem regarding music quality seems difficult to tackle, it's far from impossible.Google Play Music has a number of features integrated that can help preserve your precious monthly data cap. It does so by using your phone's spare storage as a resource, automatically creating a cache of songs you frequently listen to — even letting you download albums, playlists, and radio stations.

Step 1: Go to the Music Quality SettingsOn both iOS and Android, tap the hamburger menu in the top-left corner. Then, tap "Settings" to get started. The relevant settings on Android are under the Playback and Downloading headers. On iOS, they're housed in Streaming & Downloading. For the most part, these settings are synonymous across the two platforms. There are a couple exceptions, but I won't talk about them until they come up. For the purpose of this guide, I'm going to follow the lead of Android's settings, as they already break everything up nicely.

Step 2: Adjust Wi-Fi Streaming SettingsAs previously, mentioned, the settings that I'm going to bring up here can be found in Playback on Android, and Streaming & Downloading on iOS. The first item, "Stream only on Wi-Fi," ("Stream via Wi-Fi only" on iOS) should only be checked if you're really tight on data, as it prevents any streaming on mobile data. If you're on an especially stingy mobile plan, this is a perfectly reasonable way to make sure you stay within your limit. Most Americans don't have to deal with monthly data caps from their home internet service provider, so don't be afraid of setting the "Quality on wifi network" ("Wi-Fi stream quality" on iOS) to "Always High." If you do live under a data cap on your Wi-Fi network, feel free to turn down the quality to "Low." You may also need to lower the quality if your home network is on the slower side and tends to need extra time to buffer.

Step 3: Adjust Mobile Network Streaming SettingsThis is where things get a little dicey. Mobile carriers own the data-consuming souls of the vast majority of Americans, forcing them under a ruthless data cap. Even for those with "unlimited" plans, there's a good chance that your provider will throttle your speeds after you hit a certain threshold. One way to combat going over your cap is to be frugal when streaming via mobile data. Unless you have a truly unlimited data plan, I highly recommend choosing "Low" under "Quality on mobile network" ("Mobile networks stream quality" on iOS).

Step 4: Use the CacheBy now, you've probably heard of cache in reference to data that programs accumulate to help them run faster. After a while, this data grows, and clearing out your cache is a good way to free up some space. This is not unlike Google Play Music's cache. If enabled (under "Playback" on Android and "Streaming & downloading" on iOS), Google Play Music will automatically store songs as you listen to them, effectively downloading them for offline playback. The app appears to show some discretion, caching songs that you listen to more frequently than others. Once a song is cached, it won't count against your data cap when you play it, as it's not being streamed from Google's servers — it's stored locally on your phone. As with any other cache, your Google Play Music cache can become large and unweidly at times. When you run out of storage on your phone, you can clear your cache by navigating to "Clear cache" under the Downloading header on Android. On iOS, "Clear cache" is under Streaming & downloading.

Step 5: Download Your MusicAs I alluded to in Step 4, you can download your music. While the cache is a passive form of downloading, you can actively download music as well. This step will take part in the Downloading header on Android, and the Streaming & downloading header on iOS. To show respect for your data cap, I suggest switching on "Download only on Wi-Fi" (or "Download via Wi-Fi only" on iOS). You are also able to choose the "Download quality" on the pair of platforms. If you're a stickler for audio quality and have plenty of extra space on your phone, then feel free to choose "High." If you want to eek out every last megabyte on your phone, then "Medium" or "Low" is just fine. Remember, either way, this won't count against your data plan as long as you download via Wi-Fi. Right, we should probably download something eventually. You can download albums, playlists, and radio stations. One method of doing so is opening up the item in its own page (like expanding a playlist by tapping on it), then tapping the black downward-facing arrow. It should start to fill in orange to indicate that it's being downloaded, and it'll become a check inside an orange bubble when it's done. You can also download something by tapping the three-dot menu next to it, and tapping "download."

Tip 1: Manage Your DownloadsIt's easy enough to manage your downloads. Do so by tapping "Manage downloads" under Downloading for Android (and Streaming & downloading on iOS). All your downloads will appear here, including ones that are still downloading. You can pause their download by tapping "Pause Downloads." You can also monitor the progress of your downloads — how full the bubble is indicates the percentage of how complete your download is. Tap on any of your downloads to go to them, where you can hit the check mark in the orange bubble to delete it from your downloads. You'll need to confirm before Google Play Music lets you get rid of anything, though.

Tip 2: 'Downloaded Only' ModeIf you're really worried about accidentally streaming something, toggle "Downloaded only" mode by going back to the hamburger menu we used to get to Settings. This will only allow you to listen to music that's on your device. This is actually also the only way you can see what Google decided to cache for you, so that's a neat trick.

Tip 3: Auto-DownloadAuto-download is an Android-only feature that automatically downloads music as you listen to it. Whereas the cache shows discretion, this feature does not — so enable it under Downloading if you'd like. However, it won't work if you disable the cache. Has this helped you become a data cap wizard like you hoped? Do you have any other tips and tricks to offer? Extensibility is a feature that allows developers to integrate their apps into iOS 8 in different ways—that's how we have widgets in the Notification Center, more sharing options in the Photos app, the use of third-party keyboards such as SwiftKey, and more.Another such feature that has emanated from extensibility, which I very much welcome as an avid photographer, is the ability to use third-party photo editing tools directly from the Photos app. With this feature, you can add filters, instill text, and use other tools to edit all of your photos from a single app. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.
In Photos, select a picture you would like to edit, then tap on Edit. At the top left, you'll see a circle icon with three-dots in it: this is the new icon that appears when you have a third-party app on your device that connects with your built-in photo editor. Note: The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus have the circle icon with three dots located at the bottom of the screen, since the device has more room for icons. When you tap on the icon, you'll get a screen where a listing of your compatible apps will be. If you don't see any there, tap on More to view the apps that are compatible with the built-in photo editor, then enable them so they show up in the editing tools menu. Now that the app is enabled, go back to the menu where you'll see the new app icon appear. Tap on it, and the tools that you would usually see only in the third-party app will now appear integrated in the Photos app. With Litely, the filters from the app are available directly through the Photos app—just scroll down to select one, then swipe left and right to adjust its intensity. Tap Done when you're finished and your photo will be saved with your edits. For all of you iPhoneographers, this is a feature that you're sure to love as it rolls out with more third-party apps.

SCOthman blocks Snapchat's jailbreak detection. As you already know, Snapchat places stringent restrictions on users with jailbreak tools and hacked apps. Once it detects some unusual activity on an iPhone, it prevents the user from using the app or even bans him temporarily.

Doing either of the above steps will only remove the app from the Apple Watch and not the iPhone. To remove an app from both devices, simply uninstall the app from your iPhone like normal. There is no way to keep the app on the Apple Watch if you want to remove it from the iPhone. If it's not on the iPhone, then it can't run on the watch.

How To: The Easiest Way to Share a Wi-Fi Password from Your iPhone to an Android Device
An awesome new feature appeared in iOS 11 that lets you easily share your Wi-Fi password to anyone else with iOS 11 or higher just by tapping "Share Password" on your iPhone when they try to connect to the same network. However, if your friend is using Android or another mobile OS, this feature doesn't help at all — but there's still an easier way than dealing with long, complicated passwords. With a simple app, you can make a QR code that your guests can scan with their smartphone to connect to your Wi-Fi network. The whole process is automatic — once they scan the code, they'll be able to connect directly to your network. You can also save it for future use, so you don't need to tediously enter and re-enter in your Wi-Fi network's information whenever you need to do so.Using a QR code is much faster than using an app like Wi-Fi Widget, which lets you share a password from the Today View on your iPhone that somebody can copy and paste into their Wi-Fi settings. The QR code route also eliminates having your network's password stored in plain text in someone's messages app or wherever.Don't Miss: Instantly Share Wi-Fi Passwords to Other iOS 11 Devices Nearby

Step 1: Find Your SSID (Wi-Fi Network Name)First, find your SSID (service set identifier), aka your Wi-Fi network's name. For example, if you named your wireless network "IL0V3D0G5," that's your SSID. If you're not sure what it is, open the Settings app, then tap "Wi-Fi." The network you're currently connected will show the SSID right there at the top. After you find your SSID, record it somewhere as you'll need it later on.

Step 2: Install Visual CodesThe app you'll use to create your QR code is called Visual Codes, by developer Benjamin Mayo. Search for it in the iOS App Store or go directly to its page using the link below, then tap "Get."Install Visual Codes for free from the App Store

Step 3: Create Your QR CodeCreating a QR Code is simple. When you first open up the app, you'll be taken to the Codes screen. Seeing as you don't have any yet, tap "Add Code" at the bottom. Once you're on the code creation screen for Visual Codes, tap "Connect To Wi-Fi" underneath the header that reads or create code with action. Now, you'll be asked to enter your network's name, password, and security. The name is the SSID, and the password is the one that you created for your W-Fi network. The security option will default to "WPA," and this is almost always the correct option. If your network uses WEP or nothing, you've got to beef up security!Don't Miss: How to Recover a Lost Wi-Fi Password from Any Device Underneath this, you can label this QR code. The label won't change how the code looks or works, but it can help you identify it if you create a lot of different codes, such as ones for "Home" or "Work."It's really important that you enter this information correctly, as the app itself has no way of knowing whether or not it's correct. Visual Codes doesn't have access to your Wi-Fi information inherently — it only knows what you feed it directly. Tap "Create Code" at the bottom when you're satisfied with everything. A screen will pop up, where you'll tap "Create Code" again to confirm. Tip: After creating the code, you can tap on it in the Codes section, then tap "Edit" to select some colored themes to apply to your QR code.

Step 4: Make Your QR Code Easily RetrievableOnce you create the code, it'll be stored in Visual Codes' library of your QR codes — called Codes. Tap on the code from here to see its full-sized glory. If you want a shareable version of the code, you can tap "Share," but this feature is locked behind a $1.99 paywall, as is the "Print" feature. If you don't want to help the developer out a bit, just take a screenshot of the QR code which will be stored in your Photos app. Alternatively, and an even better way, is to just tell Siri to open the QR code. This isn't enabled by default, so from the Codes screen in Visual Codes, tap on "Settings" in the top right. Next, tap "Pinned Code" under the Siri heading, tap the code you want to be your default code, grant Siri access with "OK" (if not already done), then go back to "Settings" and hit "Done" to finish.

Step 5: Give Your Friends Your Wi-Fi LoginNow that everything's taken care of on your end, sharing your Wi-Fi network in the future is super easy. Go to "Photos" and open the screenshot you took of your QR code. If you pinned your code in Visual Codes instead, you can just ask Siri to "Show my Visual Codes code," and she'll show it to you right away. If you just say "Show my Visual Codes," Siri will open up the app instead. If your friend is using an iPhone and Apple's built-in "Share My Wi-Fi" feature isn't working for some reason, the next step is really simple. Ask them to open up their Camera app, and have them point their phone at your screen. Their iPhone should read the QR code immediately, and a notification will pop up asking them if they want to join your Wi-Fi network. Have them tap this notification, then hit the "Join" button. Now, they should be connected to your network.Don't Miss: 13 QR Code Scanners for Your iPhone That Are Safer's Than Apple's If your friend is using an Android device, however, they'll probably need a QR scanner app, as most phones don't have this built into the camera. We recommend QR Code Reader and Scanner by Kaspersky Lab. Once the code is recognized by the QR scanner app, your friend can tap "Connect" to connect automatically. If you wanted to take things a step further, print out the QR code by sending the file over to your computer. From there, tape the code to your router or a surface nearby. Then your friends can just use Step 5, but with a physical QR code instead of your phone's screen!Don't Miss: How to Share Your Wi-Fi Password from Android with a QR CodeFollow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Flipboard Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Flipboard

Google Photos: How to Transfer Pictures from Facebook, Dropbox, Instagram, Flickr, & More

Google Photos: How to Transfer Pictures from Facebook, Dropbox, Instagram, Flickr, & More
Google made a huge splash this year in their annual Google I/O with an awesome announcement regarding their Photos app. Although I was primarily interested in the details surrounding Android M, my ears instantly perked up when Google announced that their Photos app will now offer free, unlimited, high-quality storage. That's right... High-quality. Free. And unlimited. Why the hell should you care? Because regardless if you're an Android or Apple user, Google is giving you the opportunity to save money and precious storage space on your respected devices by aggregating every single photo you have all into one extremely easy-to-use application.Photos supports 16 MP photo quality and 1080p video quality, storing anything larger than that in compressed, print-quality resolution. That being said, you probably have pictures scattered all over the place, like Facebook, Instagram, Dropbox, and even iCloud, that you'll probably want to import into the new Google Photos, so we're here to show you how.
How to Extract Photos from Different SourcesThe process is different for each service or application. While some make it easy, others may not have a clear-cut way of downloading your content, even if it is your content. Because of this, we'll be going through some of the more popular sites that might currently be hosting your photos and videos.

Facebook Pictures & VideosSince most of our lives are chronicled on Facebook, let's start here. To get started, you'll need to grab all of your pictures. Don't worry, we're not going one-by-one and saving them all.On the Facebook website, enter the General settings and "Download a copy of your Facebook data." Facebook will then email you a .zip file with all of the photo or video content you've posted or shared on Facebook, which does not include pictures you were tagged in by others.

Instagram PicturesUnfortunately, Instagram doesn't offer a similar service like Facebook does. But don't worry, because it's still simple using the free web service Downgram.Just sign in using your Instagram information, then either select all of your images or choose individual photos to download. Also, be aware that the "Select all" option will not select every photo you've ever posted. For that, you'll have to go to the bottom of the page and click "Load more images" to expand the page. This may need to be done several times if you have a lot of pictures.

Dropbox ContentAlthough Dropbox doesn't let you download your images or videos as easily as Facebook does, this process will not require any third-party apps or services. All you need to do is select your all or individual images then click "Share." When the share options pop up, choose "Get Link," which will then automatically be copied to your clipboard. You can also do the same for whole folders, say, if you have them all in a neat and tidy Photos folder. Paste the generated link in your browser then click "Download" on the preview page to begin downloading your zip file. Note: If you use the Dropbox desktop client, you do not have to do this. Skip below to the section on importing photos into Google Photos for more info.

Flickr PhotosAlthough Flickr isn't as popular as it once was, you may have some old, nostalgic photos on there. Thankfully, Flickr is the easiest in terms of downloading images. Just highlight the images you want and click the "Download" option that appears below once you do.

iCloud ContentiOS user also have it pretty easy when downloading their pictures from iCloud. Once signed in to iCloud.com, simply select all the images you want then click "Download." You can check particular pictures or just highlight them all. Unfortunately, for some odd reason, Apple doesn't provide you with a convenient zip file—they instead download each individual image.

Pictures from Your Android or iOS DeviceThis section doesn't need much explanation, because all you need to do is install the application on your iPhone or Android device. Along with any pictures you've already uploaded to Photos, the images pre-existing on your phone will also by synced with the application. Convenient, right? (1) Google Photos on Android, (2) Google Photos on iOS

Importing Pictures into Google PhotosNow that you've successfully got all of your images, it's time to import them into Google Photos. For the majority of these, all you need to do is extract the images from their zips, which should still be in your Downloads folder unless you've moved them, then drag and drop them into the Photos webpage (make sure you're logged in to your Google account). For those of you using the Dropbox desktop client or have iCloud drive on your computer, this is even easier as you can just click "Upload photos" from the Google Photos page and upload directly. So there you have it. With all your images stored safely in one place, there's no need to worry about accidentally deleting or losing any. Maybe Google's insane for giving us this free storage space, but it's definitely well worth taking advantage.Follow Gadget Hacks over on Facebook, Google+, and Twitter!

How To: 13 Tips for Recording Better Videos on Your Galaxy

How To: 13 Tips for Recording Better Videos on Your Galaxy

Smartphones have put an end to camcorders. If you want to capture memorable moments in high quality, look no further than that technological marvel in your pocket. Recent Galaxy phones are shining examples of how far we've come — but the more capable a camera gets, the more complicated things can be.Below, we'll highlight many lesser-known video features in Samsung's Camera app, and since it's remained largely unchanged from Android Oreo to Android Pie (One UI), the majority of these tips will apply to all recent Galaxy flagships. So whether you're using an S8, S9, S10, Note 8, or Note 9, try these tricks to ensure consistently great videos when filming using Samsung Camera.Don't Miss: 18 Privacy & Security Settings to Double-Check on Your Galaxy S10

Tip 1. Quickly Set the Aspect Ratio (One UI)If your Galaxy is running the new One UI update, you can quickly set your video's aspect ratio in just a few taps, regardless of whether you're using the selfie or main camera. Tap on the ratio icon located along the top of the viewfinder and choose between "16:9," "Full," and "1:1" for both front and rear cameras. Keep in mind that changing the aspect ratio will also change the resolution, which varies between Galaxy devices. On the S10, for instance, this option varies between 1920 x 1080 on "16:9" by default, 2288 x 1080 on "Full," and 1440 x 1440 when set to "1:1."

Tip 2. Change Your Video's Resolution (Oreo & One UI)When you're filming videos using the standard 16:9 aspect ratio, Samsung Camera lets you customize the video resolution. For this, you'll need to go into the app's settings page by tapping on the cog-shaped icon located either along the top-left of the viewfinder (One UI), or on the left-hand side right above the shutter button (Oreo). From there, tap on either "Rear video size" or "Front video size," depending on which one you want to adjust. Choose "Resolution" within the "16:9" option, then select the video resolution from the overflow menu that appears. For maximum quality and frame rate, you may want to set the resolution to UHD (60 fps)for the main camera, though doing so will cause videos to take up more storage space.

Tip 3. Keep Your Videos Smooth & Steady (Oreo & One UI)If you're filming a video on your Galaxy S10 while on the move, there's a nifty setting you can enable to ensure your recording stays as steady and stable as possible. Aptly named Super Steady, the feature can be enabled by tapping on the hand icon along the top of your S10's viewfinder. Enabling the feature on your S10 significantly reduces wobbling for a nearly steady video. And while Super Steady isn't available on older devices, you can still enable "Video stabilization" from within Samsung Camera's settings for noticeably smoother videos. Granted, the feature is not as effective as Super Steady, but still does the job quite well, as you can see from the comparison GIFs below. (1) Super Steady enabled. (2) Video stabilization enabled. (3) Video stabilization disabled.

Tip 4. Record Videos Hands-Free (Oreo & One UI)Galaxy devices have a relatively hidden setting within Samsung Camera that lets you verbally command the app to record videos without the need to summon Bixby or other AI assistants. To enable this option on One UI, select "Shooting methods" within the app's settings, then enable the "Voice control" toggle. For Oreo, the toggle for "Voice control" is located within the "Common" section of the app's settings.

Tip 5. Zoom in & Out Like a Pro (Oreo & One UI)The zoom function on your Galaxy's video camera is a handy feature for getting closeup shots of subjects at a distance, and flagships like the S10 and Note 9 let you digitally zoom in up to 10x. On One UI, you can zoom in instantly simply by tapping on on the tree icons right above the shutter button to zoom in up to 2x. Beyond that, you can swipe on the icons if you need to fine tune the zoom and get in even closer. Oreo-based Galaxy devices also give you two primary ways of zooming in and out of videos. First, you can swipe on the shutter button to zoom in and out before you initiate recording. Once you've started recording, you can swipe on the stop button to zoom in and out while filming.
Tip 6. Use Volume Keys as a Shutter Button (Oreo & One UI)For added convenience, you can use the volume buttons to start and stop recording videos. If you're on One UI, head to the Camera app's settings and select "Shooting methods" if you're on One UI or scroll to the "Common" section if you're on Oreo. From there, tap "Press Volume key to" and choose "Take picture or record video."Alternatively, you can also set the volume key to zoom in and out if you frequently use the zoom feature but find the default on-screen method a little too cumbersome.

Tip 7. Instantly Create GIFs (Oreo & One UI)GIFs are the medium of social media, but it's not always easy to make them. Instead of recording a video, then converting it to a GIF, you should know that your Galaxy can make GIFs on the fly.If your Galaxy is on Oreo, you can enable this option straight from the Camera app's settings by tapping "Hold Camera button to" and selecting "Create GIF" from the menu. On One UI, the "Hold Shutter button to" option can be found under the "Pictures" section within the main camera settings page. So tap on the setting and choose "Create GIF" from the selection that pops up.

Tip 8. Preview Video Before Recording (Oreo)Because you can shoot both still photos and videos in the Samsung Camera app on Oreo, it has a tendency to zoom in whenever you tap record. This frequently leads to recordings that start off shakily, as you often had to quickly reorient the video to focus on your subject. Fortunately, One UI has since solved this problem by separating video recording into its very own camera mode.If your Galaxy is still on Oreo, however, you still have the ability to preview your prospective video before you record it to ensure you're properly focused on what you want to capture. To do so, simply tap and hold on the record button. Once you're ready to start, release the button to initiate recording.

Tip 9. Master 'Super Slow-Mo' (Galaxy S9 & Up)With its introduction alongside the Galaxy S9, Samsung Camera's Super Slow-mo feature gave Galaxy users the ability to capture videos at an impressive 960 fps (frames per second). The feature comes laden with goodies to make recording, editing, and sharing very user-friendly. For a more detailed guide on the topic, be sure to check out our full rundown on Super Slow-Mo below.More Info: 10 Tips for Using Samsung's Super Slow-Mo Camera Like a Pro

Tip 10. Apply Filters (Oreo & One UI)Video filters are not only great for accentuating your video's colors to better reflect the mood or atmosphere you're trying to convey, they're also a handy tool to adjust your video's appearance when filming under various lighting conditions.Filters are incredibly simple to access. Simply tap on the magic wand icon along the top or above the shutter button within the view finder for One UI and Oreo devices, respectively. From there, choose from the selection of filters available until you find one that suits your needs, and they'll be applied on the fly. For more filters, tap on the download icon and install directly from the Galaxy Store.

Tip 11. Enable Grid Lines (Oreo & One UI)Having grid lines enabled while taking photos on your Galaxy is a great way to help yourself practice with framing techniques like the rule of thirds. It's also very handy in helping you properly orient your videos and keeping them centered to ensure you record moments in the best quality possible. This option can easily enabled from within Samsung Camera's settings, and can be found under the "Useful features" or "Common" sections on One UI and Oreo, respectively. From there, you can choose between "3 x 3" and "Square," which will overlay faint grid lines in your viewfinder.

Tip 12. Maximize Compatibility (Oreo & One UI)Videos are made for sharing, so you want to ensure they'll be able to play on as many phones, tablets, and computers as possible. To do this, go inside Samsung Camera's settings, and select "Video size" for the rear camera. From there, make sure that "High efficiency video" is toggled off for better compatibility. Note that this will cause videos to take up more space.

Tip 13. Add AR Stickers (Oreo & One UI)If you want to add some pizzazz to your videos, Samsung Camera lets you apply fun and whimsical AR stickers and animojis, similar to the Playground feature found on Pixel devices. To do so, either tap on "AR Emoji" along the top if you're on One UI, or swipe along the top until you get to the "AR Emoji" camera mode on Oreo. From there, you're free to choose between various AR emojis and stickers to accentuate your videos, though you'll need to detect a face for the former to kick in. If you find the selection a little too bare for you liking, you can tap on the Galaxy Store icon to install more AR Emojis and stickers directly from Samsung's native app store. Admittedly, Samsung Camera's AR Emojis pale in comparison to Google Camera's Playground. Fortunately, you can get the Pixel's AR sticker functionality on your Galaxy with no root required.
